Hurricane with rear gunner?

Never even knew these existed but came across this whilst searching for something else........

"During WW II, several Hawker Hurricanes were delivered to the Soviet Union, and were subject to numerous modifications, some rather far-going. In one of the modified batches the Hurricanes were equipped with additional post for a rear gunner with a ShKAS machine gun. These aircraft were used for long range artillery spotting. The gunner was also a spotter to correct the artillery fire. In order to facilitate his task, a port was cut out in the bottom of the aeroplane. Some 20 aircraft were converted that way. They flew in Leningrad, Volkhov, Kalinin Fronts."

that would be pretty sweet 8) though it's nice to know that 176 Hurricane Mk IIAs, 1690 Mk IIBs, 1130 Mk IICs, 529 Mk Xs, 150 Mk XIs and 248 Mk XIIs only count as "several Hawker Hurricanes" Tongue *snort* must have been written by a yank...

(stats from Aircraft of the Aces 74: Soviet Lend-Lease Aces of WW2, Pg 22).

I've never seen this before! The russians did some odd things with aeroplanes for sure. The hurricanes in russian service didn't last the entire war if I understand right, with most being withdrawn in 1943, others ending up as mailplanes with no great success.

Now that would be one nice thing to fly....imagine going around in this, and the Hun behind you doesn't know about the rear gunner....
Seriously, though, this'd be nice for some alternate BoB-scenarios, or some Ostfront action..so why not mod that hing, someone?

Any more info available on this bird? Did they remove some of the guns in the wings (or ammo, or fuel tanks) to compensate for the weight increase? If anyone has info on this and other Russian field mods of western lend-lease equipment i would be very interested in it.
several in that they were modified. which means several were modified, read it closely
Yes, blessed as I am with a decent amount of intellect to have achieved my Bachelors of Science in History and currently working on my MBA, I'm aware of what the author was trying to say. Forgive me a moment of smart-assery, admittedly i should have been more clear that I was being so, but all the same it was a rather unclear statement. If the writer had said there were several of the Hurricanes delivered that were subject to numerous changes, it would be different, but that isn't what was said. and even then far more than several of the Hurricanes that were delivered were subject to changes. many of the Mk IIBs delivered were upgunned to the 2xShVAK and 2xUB gun layout we have in the game. So overall i just considered the quote a drastic understatement and felt the need to comment on it, that's all.

Wasn't there an early model P-51, converted with a seat behind the pilot and a Plexiglas window, built to take a US general on a tour of Normandy after the landings? I think it was Eisenhower. Imagine how heavily it was escorted!

There was, a P-51B/C, but that in itself wasn't unique either really. Numerous fighter groups modified old war-weary fighters to two seaters, have numerous books with pics to show this but lack a scanner and time atm to look for pics online. and i don't think that the plane actually successfully completed its mission, either it had to turn back or its escort did, can't remember off the top of my head. i'll try and find info later. and also i don't think it was that heavily escorted because while extremely important it would have called much attention to the plane and while it would have been well defended with a large escort from enemy fighters, it would not have probably been a great target for AA batteries that escorts really can't do much for.
