[MOD] Darwin 1942-43 v1.1 *UPDATED* [v4.09]
#61

Dear Neil,

I have started a map project given to me by Fabian Fred. The area covers Far North Queensland and most of PNG.
With the countries being vastly different from each other regarding environment would I be able to use some of your textures from your very good Darwin map.

Some of your textures would cover a lot of the Gulf Country. It's a pity Normonton does not quite make it on the map.

please check thread on WIP AUS/PNG map and New map idea Fare North Queensland and PNG thread.

I was born in Canada but had lived in Far North Queensland for 22 years.

Waiting in anticipation of your reply.

Cheers Kirby

Dear Neil,
Thank you for the quick response I have started to work on some seamless textures today taken from your map.
With the Far North I am considering on Burma Jungle for the mountain ranges, tablelands, hills around Cairns, Iron Range etc.etc, from the mountain ranges to the coast a selection of your textures to keep it fairly in line with the way your map is presented in game reasonably dry looking.
Have started flying the Darwin campaign in between working on this map.
Cheers

And yes it is geographical snobbery if you're wondering, the rest of you!

Your Map is Fantastic!

While beta testing my FEAF campaign I ran across one Minor issue with Taxi Waypoints at Sattler's Field (sp?) south of Darwin.

The issue was that the B-17E's in my campaign end up cliping one another while taxing, this is of no fault of your's as I am using a fighter field to represent Batchelor Field where MacArther was rescued to, south of Darwin.

I wanted to ask your Permission to simply widen the Taxi routes a little on that lower airfield and then offer the updated Static.Actors (which would only have that change) with my Far East Air Force Campaign.

Your Darwin map as been a great addition and worked wonderfully as a base of operations for my Fall of the Philippines FEAF Campaign.

I would Gladly take your response here or in PM's and thank you for taking to time to build this map, and also to read my request for permission.

Thanks,

Hi Neil,
I just wanted to say great job on the map and that I sent you a PM with some links to research info you may not have seen in case you ever want to do a v1.1.

Hi Neil,
I'm attempting to build a DCG campaign for two local virtual squadrons (457 & No5) based around your Darwin map but I'm running into terrible trouble with carrier patrol areas because the map doesn't have enough sea room to place the minimum size patrol box without including landmasses - which causes problems in DCG.

Is there any chance you could generate a new version of your map where the only change is to add another 150 kms or 200 km of open sea north of the existing map please?

I don't know if this is as simple as it sounds but if it's easy for you to do it would allow carrier based campaigns to be built on this map.

I'll send you a PM as well considering the time of year and that you may be away and not monitoring this thread.

Thank you

Cheers,
Stonehouse

First Impressions: I love it. Beautifull! Great frame rates!

Ive been waiting for Neil to finish this and Im really happy with it, but I have noticed one tiny little thing that you maybe able to fix Neil. AI when taxi-ing do not avoid parked static aircraft at Darwin and the field next to it. I made this mission and you can notice at the end when they are taxing they all run into the parked aircraft. Its not only Darwin, with the two C47s landing at the other field, one taxis in and parks, then the other taxis straight into it!

Hiya,

Glad you're enjoying the map.

I'm not sure i can do much about stopping the AI from hitting objects that have been placed in a mission. The AI will usually avoid objects that are embedded in the map by stopping dead and disappearing. This had been checked in beta testing to make sure all taxi routes and parking bays were clear for the AI to taxi and park properly. I guess a bit of trial and error in placing parked a/c and objects in the mission will avoid these problems, I know it's a bugger when you can't get things working just how you want them. I also had to make some compromises when building the map.

I am enjoying it immensly!

I guess I will have to just work out where to park static a/c from trial and error

One thing that does need your attention is trees spilling onto the railway lines. This has the effect of the train being destroyed when it tries to proceed through them

Another, but minor annoyance is the starting point for a/c at darwin, they start well up the strip and almost on the edge, could you move that back a bit and centre it?

Yep, no probs Smile

Will add that to the list of things that need attending to for the update 8)
