Is fixing the LOD transition modelling possible?
#1

I haven't been flying IL-2 for more than 1 year, but I remember that the transition from long distance model of an aircraft over the medium distance model to the nearby model was a "problem".

Here's an all too often occuring scenario:

I spot enemy aircraft at a long range. Stealthily I am approaching them at 15 - 10 - 5 - 3 kilometers. Everything is going well : I have a huge height and speed advantage, and they didn't spot me yet. In a few moments at least one of them will be going down in flames. Final lining up, but then suddenly at about 500 meters the enemy aircraft almost disappear. I am losing my fix on the targets that start spotting me and take evasive action, but this I don't notice very well as they seem blended with the sky. Then suddenly at about 300 meters I regain detailled sight, but then it is too late and another boom and zoom attack is spoiled by the LOD transition.

Must have something to do with something I found here on the AAA forum and looking at this picture it may be very easy to fix (eg by making the graphics engine using the short range model also for longer distances, as modders did for EAW many many years ago), but not by me as I am without knowledge about modding the innards of IL-2:

Many thanks for your answers.

that would be one of the best mods ever made if possible!
Imagine no more horrible 109s, Ju87s, Ju88s etc etc from long distance!!!

I love the idea!
Anyone!??

Hey Jumo,
The same thing has been driving me nuts for ages, I thought it must be just me until I found your post. I've been changing graphic settings and conf.ini settings to no avail. Have you found a solution or given up trying?
Has anyone else found a solution?

I've been struggling for days with finally getting to start a topic on this

Thanx for bringing this up.

Try flying an axis quick mission over Norway under best conditions: Been trying to bounce an incoming bunch of Mustang MkIII with Spitfire escorts 1000m below.

They'll blend into sea any time you do rolling maneuver given you notice their presence before your wingman cries out for help. No joy at all!

Especially late Il2 attributions (FB onwards) are somehow f*cked up in their LODs. Want further examples?

Fw-190Ds missing big parts of their side fuselage between pit and tail (best viewed by improper formation flying).

Spits missing one complete half/wing when banking/rolling off to the side.

LODs seem worst when about 400m+ away.

I hope someone can adress this Sad

I have asked exactly this a few times in the past but mt threads have recieved no answers and disappeard within a day the bottom of the page...
seems to be no interest for a mod like that even tho I think I would be one of the best mods for the game!!

I hate the way ju88 and 109 and ju87s look from far!!!

When intercepting Ju-87's, you know you're getting closer when the Stukas are getting smaller... Confusedhock:

..right. And when there's simply no Spit on your tail you've finally found'em . It's annoying. Like always counting visible A/c and calculating the amount of opponents right after you by doing a permanent math.

Yes, this is a way to get some really big fame within our community.

fixing the LODs would involve remodeling the aircraft in question if im correct (not sure). as shown at the top of the page, the LODs are affected by the detail used to model the aircraft when it is created, so there would be considerable work involved to change any number of aircraft. there are 5 or 6 LODs for each aircraft so you can imagine the amount of 3D work involved. as far as changing the way the game engine uses the different model LODs, also i think that there would be even more work. there is also the frame rate penalty to consider, as the reason the game reduces detail at distance is to reduce system load, so using higher detail models at distance with large numbers of aircraft, for instance, could reduce to unplayable frame rates on lower end machines.

But will be possible to replace LOD 2, 3, 4 and 5 for LOD 1, that will make the transition between LOD almost nothing and you will only get a more detailed model at really close distance.

As it is by now we get system load while enjoying no sightings at all.

It's more about fixing that dot->big scheme(cross, line)-small scheme/no visible A/c at all->LOD1 issue.

I'm not wishng for detail on far out planes.

It would be nice to finally have the broken LOD models fixed. That's what happened when they used an automated LOD generation and didn't check the results. Assumption is....

OK seems that this is going to end in the bottom again.

Nobody taking this task???

because it would require a MAJOR revision in the aircraft models Basically, you need to redo like 50% of the work required with modelling. So no. Its not a matter of adjusting a couple of lines of text.... its part of the aircraft build process.

Id be surprised if noone knew how to do that Magpie!

I think I understand what people are asking, but I don't think it's being read correctly.

No-one is asking for the planes to be re-modelled, what they are 'simply'asking is this;

Could the code altered so that LOD 00 is activated and replaces the 01,02,03 LOD, thus the game reads LOD 00 up to what would have been LOD 03?

This means that 01,02, and 03 are effectively disabled and replaced with LOD 00 in the game routine.

It would mean a larger Poly count, and would not really be possible to see the detail....BUT....it would mean there isn't that horrible 'pop' effect as the plane moves past the 00 draw distance, and the plane model would stay at 00 up to 500 metres away.

No need to re-model and planes, just change the code so that LOD 00 is active until the planes reach, say, 500 meters.

This would be BRILLIANT!!

Cheers, MP.
