has anyone ever figured out what the sight is set at distance wise? I ask because there are settings for increase sight distance and decrease sight distance. I assume this is to bring the sight into the convergence range, but what is its "zero" so to speak? I'm not taking about the ring diameter distance (109, 190, ju88 etc).
I have always wondered this, since like forever or at least since Aces came out.
I want to say that the sight, default (In IL-2 anyway), was zeroed at around 300 meters. Least thats what I remember hearing.
It actually doesn't matter the distance the sight is set at or what units it is in. When you use the sight, you set the target type to adjust the wingspan setting, then adjust the range to adjust the sight to match the target's apparent wingspan. You're performing a type of stadiametric range finding. With the correct target type entered, the center diamond tracking the center mass of the target, and the outer ring matching the wingspan, track just long enough to stabilize the sight (Actually takes about 2 seconds), and open fire.
You'll want to fire as near to your convergence range as you can, but it's not absoloutely critical to do so. As you get better you might even find the gyro sight to be more of a pain then a help, as it requires constant input to make it useful for indicating anything other than the direction you must pull lead.
