FW-190D-13 Yellow 10 camo question
#1

I was hoping some of the skinners/camo experts could provide some insight. In the mail this evening I received a copy of Jerry Crandall's great book on the rare FW-190D-13 "Yellow 10" and I have a question for the Luftwaffe camo experts / skinners out there. The color profiles show a very green mottle on the a/c including the prop spinner which also features a white spiral.

However, on the inside back cover of the book there are three color photos of the same a/c after it was fully restored and displayed at the Doug Champlin Museum. I have no doubt the color profiles are correct and the the 190 was painted in this scheme but I'm quite astonished that in the color photos the green looks like a dark grey even the prop spinner looks grey. So can the color differences be attributed to the type of day it was or from the nature of the photography since they were taken in October of 1990?

From the background in the color photos it looks to me like a clear, bright day not overcast. I'm just surprised at how non-green the color looks like in the photographs than in the color profiles.

I found this on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9fqPIJIIU8 at about 2:14 there is a shot that really shows it grey ...

I wouldn't trust the restoration. Go with the brighter green - RLM 83 was a bright colour and was very common on later war 190s. Restorations are notorious for having dulled or inaccurate colours.

The colors of this aircraft are more guesswork. I whould not say, they are historical.

The colors it was in a champlins fighter museum in Mesa Arizona are inacurate and there are no greens. It was just a typical German styled scheme. But when Gashawk aviation did the full restoration on it and recovered its original wing from the Airforce museum in dayton Ohio (There A8 had the D13's wing and vice versa) They repinted it to the way it was when it was captured much more historic and accurate.

Canon - yes all the profiles have the brighter green mottle and the green prop spinner but I was surprised that this scheme was not used in the Chaplin Museum restoration.

A follow-up question: can the green color, RLM 83, be "washed out" (for lack of a better description) depending on the photography and weather conditions etc. and appear grey? The green color, RLM 83 is very bright in all the profiles and I'm just surprsied that there is no color photographs of what it looks like now.

Waggel - dude this is awesome!!!!! Sweet man sweet! Also I found this link and it looks much, much closer to the color profiles and the RLM-82. This is from an online model club - very good photos.

Thanks Waggel!

I have been a doing some research on the D-13 and I think the default skin has a small problem: there are two shell casing ejector ports; this model only has one shell casing ejector port in between the wheel wells. I'm not sure if this is something that is already known.

Hi all.
First off to answer your question about the first restored scheme. It was incorrect. As Canon said, very rarely do restorers get the paint right especially on German aircraft.

I you look closely in Jerry's book you will see plenty of photos that will verify the scheme.
I'm very familiar with this aircraft as I live in Southern California and have made the drive over to Mesa more than once to see this bird which by the way is now in an air museum in Washington State
With a new set of clothes that still isnt quite right.
Here you go...Hope you like it.

Also I found this http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww2/f/456/2/5/22

Unit: I/JG 26
Serial: 10-+- (W.Nr.836017)
Pilot - the last commander of the JG26 Maj. Franz Goetz. May 1945. This aircraft was captured by Allies in May 1945. The fighter was originally delivered with a coat of RLM75 Gray-Violet over RLM76 Light Blue, witch was them over sprayed with a random coat of RLM 81 Brown-Violet (FS34087) and RLM82 Dark Green (FS34096). The spinner was a spiral of RLM84 Green-Blue (FS34554) and White. Gotz retained a small Ace of Spades under cockpit to perhaps remind him of JG 53. This aircraft now at the Champlin Fighter Museum in Mesa, Arizona.

RE: the 'Kommodore' stencil

"It has been suggested that the word 'Kommodore' was painted on the underside of the radiator.
Only the letters 'Ko' can be seen but its more likely to say 'Kontrolliert' meaning that the aircraft has been inspected and Neutralized buy luftwaffe personnel
under the supervision of RAF disarmament wing. this inscription is visible on other aircraft at Flensburg at the same time that 'Yellow 10' was there."

Just a footnote

A new photo of a D-13 has emerged which shows the swastika is different to previously thought

It shows W.Nr. 836016 the machine built right next to 'Yellow 10'

'Yellow 10' has been previously portrayed with a solid black swastika but it now shows it would have had a smaller black outlined version, ( 'Yellow 10' was only photographed after capture and over painting)
The over painting of 'Yellow 10's' tail show (Japos Fw190D part 2 Pg240) matches the placement on 836016 perfectly

Im going to update my skin to match this new information and I will also do a skin of the new machine Smile
