reefs. i learned
#1

i was struggling a bit as we began the "reef" phase of our texutre process on the NGNB. i finnaly figured it out.

What this picture shows:
-this is me testing the process after i opened our Map_C and drew a box on the water and filled it with RGB 148.
-then i used a brush of various sizes painting on that RGB 148 with color RGB 0. the word "reef" was done with RGB 0.

-then i opened the Map_T and drew a box in the same location on the map and filled it with RGB 45 (45 is the Map_T coastline texture #) on the Map_T. this allowed me to see it in the game.

the white lines you see are just the wave animation frozen in time.

I was tripping over the fact that you had to alter the map_C AND the map_T in order to see the reefs.
the Map_C controls the water depth.

Hi Thrud,

I'm very glad that you have worked the reef situation out.

Fabian Fred gave me a fairly good working map of North Aus and PNG.

The Great Barrier Reef is a daunting task to accomplish.

That put me off the map making procedure for a while.

This is really valuable information.

A job well done!

Once again awesome worked achieved in this thread.
I have a question regarding map c as you seem to be in the know of these matters.
How do you unscramble map c?
When I open it up in photoshop it comes up as squiggly black and white lines.
This has always been a deterent to me for map making.
Map t opens up as a picture in Photoshop.
Having the Great Barrier Reef to work over I am sure will take some time.
But Once again the above knowledge is astounding.

Hi Kirby,
I reckon the map_c you're looking at is the "compiled" one, I think if you are making changes to map_c then you'd have to do it in the "uncompiled' one and then run fly_zo's tool over that to create your new compiled map_c.

Hope that makes sense

Cheers

Here's a reef map and some images of the Great Barrier Reef.
Something that I have to accomplish with an on going map project

Definitely a daunting task lots of experimenting with the above method.

Thank you to Quelty and Red Wolf for the info for Fly zo's map c tool.

let us know what you find. We (team Pacific) will be altering our reef texture to see if we can get some better results.

I've been playing with reefs too; my Singapore Dogfight map will have them a-plenty around the Riau Islands. Not long discovered the map_t/map_c thing myself, so will be watching here with interest.

Hi Thrud,
It's a holiday today in Thailand, Constitution Day so I had some time to play around with your reef method.
I hope you like the results Once again Thrud A Top Job!!!

Thrud how do you get rid of the test on both c and t maps?
What did you use to draw your square?
I used the rectangle tool and measured my rectangles but your square is very accurate.
I missed a section in one of the rectangles light green area.
Your instructions for this method are very clear and understandable even for a photoshop novice like me.
Now I just have to get ues to it and become more creative concerning the barrier reef.

i did the exact same as you. mine didn't line up either. look in my 1st pic along the top. i just guessed the same spot on both _C and _T.

Thanks for that I guess it's just a matter of accuracy.

You'll notice with my water it's quite murky.

When Fred gave me this map he used his Thailand's load.ini. I had rice paddies in Townsville and Cairns.

Some Time ago I was playing around with different water load.ini's for this map.

Trying to get a balance between Team Pacific's Slot Map and Mr. Lowes Darwin map for water colours.

we are trying to make our reefs and coral to look like that pic, notice the dark spots. the down side is that when we add the darker colors and spots, repeating patterns may start to show up.

i'll post some screenies as i go. right now i'm doing the teadous part of adding a hi-rez satellite layer to the map_C so i can get the reefs in the right spot and depth. that's what takes so long. once i know what and where to trace, it won't take long to make the reefs.

I started to think about some kind of a layer like you are already doing.
I guess with the reef method the only thing that you'd have to be very careful of is to remember that it is kind of like a reverse fill over the layer tracing. Correct me if I am wrong.

I am interested to know what satalite images you are using and what kind of layer you are using?

I'll check the online island map for the water colours to see if they are suitable.
I'm sure I'll have to extract the load in from the sfs extractor tool.

Thrud,
My map project from Fabian Fred covers North Queensland Townsville to the tip of Australia. PNG Port Moresby and Lae.

I was more interested in Moresby and the Kokoda Track.

My map does not have Team Pacifics New Britain (Rabaul) area at all.
