Hawkman Wrote:What we need are some good hi-res drawings which include good fuselage and wing foil cross-sections. Internal airframe details would also be good. A preliminary search for websites and books that could provide good enough drawings didn't reveal too much, so if anyone out there knows of any good drawings either on the net, or published, let us know

The very best drawings of the Do 17Z (and 17M/P/215), to my knowledge, are contained in the recent Kagero book. They are fineline Autocad drawings with a full set of former profiles for both fuselage and wing. I have many references on the subject of Dornier bombers, and these are without doubt, the best I've seen. I also have some detailed schematics of the interior layout, which may be of interest.

They are too detailed to post here (when reduced to forum size the lines will be too fine to show clearly) so if you're interested PM me and I'll email them to you.

Canon - absolutely yes on on your offer to do the template skin Big Grin You must have your hands full - what with the Maps, and your family - so your offer is appreciated Big Grin It will be a while, but if we can get the 3d model built and mapped, you can work your magic on it

Yes, the 'Z' is the way to go Smile.

And yes, I can definitely squeeze in time for this much-needed aircraft. It really doesn't take me long to knock up a template, and so if you can provide me with an unwrapped model tga (once you've built the beauty) I can make a lovely skin for it Smile

There is a finished external model DO-17Z.
This model is not build by me but I know a creator.

But I still dont know really good 3dsmax creators here ...
So I cant offer this model to anybody which have positive mind, there is need guy which really know very good import problematics, limitation of Il2 engine and have good 3dsmax knowledge for update model.

So if there is any good 3dsmax creator which have interest update DO-17 model for game contact me via PM.

(is there too DO-24)

Hotspace - that first link actually provides a good example of why one should never trust the web, without corroborating evidence.

What it seems to show as a Do 17Z cockpit instrument panel is actually from a Do 217N nightfighter. That picture has been mislabelled in many books as well. You can clearly see the Revi gunsight attached to the combing for aiming the forward firing machine guns in the solid nose - and the compressed air bottles at lower right which actuated the gun breeches. The control column is entirely different to that fitted to the Do 17Z, which was hinged from the pilot's left, not centrally mounted as shown in the picture.

Nevertheless - it might be handy for some instrument detail - or, indeed, a future nightfighter mod

Importing an existing model would be the quickest way forward, I agree. but as you say, there aren't too many people that I know of outside of the AAA Mod team with the expertise to optimise such a model for the IL2 engine. Presumably, Jolly, Magpie and a few others in the team have this knowledge, but then their hands are full with current ongoing projects, such as the Lancaster. So if there is anyone else out there who knows how to do this and would like to take it on, do step forward - Magot's offer is definately worth taking on if the right person can be found. Big Grin

My advice, Hawkers, is to build it from scratch... For many a reason...

Thats whats happening with the Lancaster - a total rebuild from scratch. At the end of the day, its easier, and quicker than working off someone elses work, I assure you.

Yes, thinking more about it, probably makes much more sense to do a totally new model. From what I've seen on the web, most commercially available models are far too high poly for IL2, anyway. I've PM'd Username for his drawings, so hopefully I'll have something decent to look at soon. Big Grin

A complete build from scratch is I'm sure, a massive task. I assume that with the Lanc, you chaps have a team of modellers working on different parts of the airframe, caps, LODs and so on. The Do17's unique shape is going to present a challenge, and my modelling skills are limited, so I'm hoping that some of you guys out there with 3ds Max experience (Slow, Magot, american) will be able to do some work on this. If a team can be assembled, we can proceed - I'm hoping - under your watchful eye, Magpie

I have two of my squad mates working on the Lancaster, along with me. The original concept was to use the commercial model. After some time, and many discussions, we decided it would be, at best, usable only as a reference point. Some, minor parts of these models are usable, to a degree, but its much easier to simply start afresh.

Like wise, with this. It would be easier to build it from scratch, and isn't as much of a difficult task as you'd think - a lot of work, yes, but not difficult. Ultimately, its quicker than the modification, and lets face it, in a lot of ways, correction, of a commercial model (or even one designed for use in another sim).

Once you get the basics down, you won't have much of a problem.

Lancaster model was sent in first days of 3d converters, now we have a better knowledge Smile
So is need use a correct tools and plugins for decrease or increase quality for optimal quality,
I had tested on Do-24 model,optimalize for IL2 quality.Its easy imho.
A bit hard work is re-mapping for placeholder.

But I think that be really better build from scratch by aaa hands imho ...

This may be old hat but I found this place for warbird plans.........(no Do-17 though)

http://www.albentley-drawings.com/catalogue.htm

I'm a 20 year Autocad vet, but in all that time I have done 1 project in 3d and that was like 12 years ago...so I'm useless for 3d stuff. Now if you need a beam to column connection plate detail....I can help...lol

Anyway just trying to help
