Mod for AI Landing behaviour?
#1

Gentlemen

One of the things that has always bothered me is the way IL2 handles landings for AI aircraft. Not allowing a 2nd plane to land while another is still on the runway is just not realistic. That wasn't the case in RL, and it sure would make the game a lot more realistic if this could be addressed by one of our "Mod Gurus".

I have noticed that on very rare occasions, an AI will be told to "Go Around", and he will reply "Negative, I'm coming in anyway". Evediently there is some sort or switch or other indicator in the programming that bypasses the normal AI landing behaviour, and allows a plane to land even tho there is another on still on the runway. Evidently to simulate an emergency contition. Maybe it would be possible to make this the 'default' condition so that it would allow the AI to land one after the other without all of the go arounds?

Just a tossing this out there for consideration.

The problem is that the default runways are linear features, so for safety a pilot wouldn't ordinarily land unless the runway is clear. The game relies heavily on radio traffic control which wasn't widely used for aircraft movements in WW2. Usually pilots made a visual decision and went around if someone fired a red flare, but then, unless you were flying heavy bombers from a concrete runway the chances were you were operating out of a grass field, which gives you plenty more choices - you always land to the right of the aircraft ahead (if I remember right, it might be the other way)

Now that wider grass fields are appearing on maps, one answer is to lay a series of parallel runways on the field allowing the AI to land on all of them simultaneously, but the risk of collision is much greater and the AI can't see with his raybans on.

I've had another problem with AI behavior when landing with the other aircraft of my flight with me. Despite getting permission to land and slowing down to do so, my flight, or at least my wingman also slows down to stick with and then ends up stalling and crashing!! It's embarrassing to return successfully from a mission with your flight to have them crash all around the airfield. For this reason, when I come in to land I give my flight to "return to base" or "break" to shake them off which is unnecessarily stupid. If it isn't something I'm doing right and it's a bug with the AI then I would very much appreciate if this behaviour could be fixed too if someone decides to work on this topic.

Generally, and this is what the AI does too, even if sometimes they don't say it, they give the return to base command to their flight after passing the last airborne waypoint and begin heading to base in a broken formation.

therefore, this is what I do too, as soon as we are on the home stretch I give the command to return to base to my flight and it is rare that we have a landing accident.

the problem is if you loose the flight leader and you are number two (or next most senior of the flight still airborne) you can't order the AI to break and join the pattern. The inability to control a flight in the absence of a flight leader is absolutely ridiculous and to my mind one of the biggest failures of the game. Now if someone could fix that...
