To use any of these mods, simply unzip the contents into your IL2\MODS folder. If you have another mod that makes the B-17 flyable, then you'll need to move the contents of 3do\plane to the same folder as that mod. The in-game originals are still used if you choose a nationality other than USAAF, USN or USMC.

I am working on some other variants, so these are certainly not the final versions!
There's still a ton of things that I'd like to change on the B-17 models, but I don't know how to do the 3D modeling and modifying armament, etc (new slot work). If anyone is willing to help, please let me know!

Epic stuff.
Finally, can make some realistic missions, and beat the hell out of B17's.

Thanks sir, you just added another brick into AAA's wall, that will make IL 2 even more awesome.

Just tried it out. It is fantastic.
I will get those .tga skins to bmp and use them as pick-able skin. So I can have silver B 17 with Polish markings.

It's fantastic, got to say it again!

Absolutely fantastic! The B-17 is easily my favourite aircraft. I think it has been overlooked so far, as there were definitely a few bugs on the models, but they are so familiar and previously unflyable. Very nice to see someone lavish some effort on what is such a beautiful and iconic WWII plane. Many thanks.

Almost forgot to mention, is there a request out for an accurate B-17 cockpit?

Say, have you considered making one of the nation variants still have the Sperry turret? This should be possible, although you might need Java support from AAA.

Ah, yes, we lost the Sperry on the 'E'. Any chance of having our cake and eating it?

Still a great job though.

I'm confused...There are no unit markings on the B17's in the Pics.

Isn't that how it should be? In QMB and by default, all a/c should be devoid of unit markings unless you select them? Only national insignia should display - as in the pics above...

I want variety.. and although this mod is good... I prefer the old turret on the stock B-17E Cry

Hmm, well I guess it would be nice to have both - maybe one with the Sperry and one with the Bendix - one maybe replacing the 'hack'?

For the moment, the Sperry is more accurate if you consider the production run. The Bendix turret was replaced by a Sperry ball turret starting with the 113th B-17E built, out of a total of 512 B-17Es built by Boeing in 1941 and 1942. So a Sperry ball turret was more common by 286 B17Es (399 Vs 113 of 512.)

I will be releasing .psd templates soon for all three, so you can easily make your own!

The old versions of each plane are still there and can be used at the same time as these mods. For each model of B-17 there are 2 "slots" that the game uses; (USA) and (Multi1). If you use a mod in the (USA) folder, the (Multi1) folder still uses the original model and skins (or vice versa). I will probably make another PTO version that uses the old remote turret with the new windows/gun positions as there were several that served in the Phillipines and SW Pacific (most notably Swamp Ghost) that were armed that way.

That was intentional since these are default skins. Once I release the templates, it's really easy to make your own defaults marked any which way you'd like!

See above; you can have both! Big Grin

Actually, the remote turret on B-17Es was made by Sperry. Bendix made the remote turrets used on B-25s. The key difference is that the Bendix had the sight inside the turret while the Sperry's was in a separate blister.

Ah, so they were both Sperrys! I knew the later chin turret was definitely a Bendix, but also, so I thought was the remote belly turrets on the 'E'! Well you learn something new every day - very interesting thread - thanks for the link!

Because I'm doing a fresh install of all the mods I hadn't got round to installing this mod yet - I didn't realise the old machines were still there too, that's very good! Thanks again for this wonderful mod.

Nice job Jarink, very cool.

I replied in the DBS forum with some questions. May I request that you take a look.

You might have a 3D modeler interested in helping out there.
