Carrier Catapult mod version b4 (updated 3/14/2009)
#46

Check your e-mail cobra!

BTW The problem if he add;s to much steam pressure it add a extremely unfair unadvantage.

Try using the spitMk.1 on the catapult. It will launch you 300 meter;s in the air. So as soon s you take off you can start Turn and Burning.

There seems to be a problem with a single engine plane like a Corsairs loaded heavy. The cat seems to slow only reaching 60kts or so causing the plane to stall. Even at lighter loads it torque rolls left and stalls. I tried a few throttle settings and can launch empty but not heavy. I found this the same for Hellcat also. Maybe the cat needs more power and an earlier release from cat wound also help. It seems to throw to the end of the deck.

Cats were always adjusted by the weight of the aircraft. This may be to complex to do in here but I'm sure a happy medium could be achieved.

I'll check email out and test it tomorrow, I have to run now. Work work work

I think I switch my vote to add more steam to it. (Even thought I believe back then it was hydralics) The truth is this mod is probably going to mostly used by people flying these heavy birds. So realisticaly it would make sence. (Has any 1 tried the seafire?)

As with other mods of this kind, I believe the server has to have it installed; then clients who have it can use it - it would be great to test it at Zekes Vs. Wildcats.

For the key to release it, I'm not bothered with the chokes, but maybe the atach/detach aircraft would be better.

And another thing: please make it trigger a sound, some kind of a release sound would be great. Also some smoke on the trail would be nice although I believe these early cats were hidraulic not steamed.

I spent a couple of hours last night, playing with it on a CVE, flying the patern on a TBF, landing, get it the cat, take off, turned around, landing, taking off again, and so on... I just loved it.

It kicks really hard on the TBF on a moving carrier, so I think it should be alright for stationary CVE's online.

It's my favourite mod right now - made me want to try the P-47 on the CVE's just like the well known footage in wihch they were bound to Iwo Jima (? I guess).

Keep it up!

Some guys have said they're getting a big FPS hit.
I didn't have any issues on the first two attempts, but since then I'm experiencing something nasty that only happens once every 3 or 4 times. It's a massive - and i mean MASSIVE drop that lasts 20-30 seconds game time.!
I don't know why it only happens occasionally, I haven't changed any mission parameters...
so there is a potential issue here. I haven't found any conflicts, and that BIG FPS hit - well, its the first time i've experienced anything like it in IL2 - maybe similar to about 160+ AI planes spawning mid-mission, i suppose... Cry
The issue for me is why it's only happening every 3rd or 4th time... :?: :?:

I also believe we need more powerful catapults, will be a great addition to the game If we can launch a fully loaded Corsair from a CVE. Korea! Here we go!!

Fireball Wrote:I've posted a beta Carrier Catapult mod here: CarrierCatapult_b2.rar (The link is inoperative)

Inside the rar file is a folder named 'CarrierCatapult_b2'. Copy or extract this folder to the MODS folder in your IL-2 game folder.

The way it works (for now anyway) is that you release your chocks and taxi up to the start of the catapult track. When you're close, within about 10 meters or so, stop and put your chocks back in. If you're close enough when you put your chocks in, you'll get automatically moved into position on the catapult. Then power up, full flaps, etc. When you're ready, release chocks and the catapult will fire you off the end of the deck. Don't do any control movements til you're clear of the deck. Then raise gear, flaps, etc.

NOTES:

The catapult should work on the CVL's, CVE's, Essex/Intrepid (both catapults), Illustrious, and the Graf Zeppelin (both catapults). From what I could see, none of the Japanese carriers in the game have catapults.

The AI don't know about the catapults yet, so they still take off the old-fashioned way. I'll try to teach them to use the catapult in the next CarrierTakeoff mod release.

Also when I do the next BombbayDoors/Hotkeys version I may use some other key than the Chocks key to lock and launch the catapult. One problem with using the Chocks key is that once you've locked yourself into the catapult, there's no way out other than launching. You can't just power back, release your chocks and taxi away. Another issue is that you have to be careful where you park after landing. If you stop too near the catapult and put your chocks in, you'll get snapped over to the catapult track.

Many thanks to the guys at Air Group 51 for testing this out over the past couple weeks!

Fireball

How about using the up or down arrow key... or whatever key is used for attach/detach aircraft.. since you wouldnt be using both functions at the same time anyway.. I think it was American who originally suggested this in his proposal for this mod here.

Cool mod - thanks.
