Trying to make a startup sound
#1

I am trying to get the game to recognize my startup files for the 190A. As I understand things, every plane uses one of the engine type preset (prs) files for the various sounds it plays for the engine when it's running. But there are a few engines which have additional prs files. The Sabre, Merlin XX, and DB600 Series also have special startup prs files, with start.begin and start.end in the names. From what I can tell listening in on the Tempest, start.begin defines what sound is played at the moment you hit the I key, while start.end defines what sound is played as the engine coughs to life. Most aircraft have a simple click when you hit the I key, then they wind up (this sound is first in the regular prs file's sample list), and they don't have a coughing to life sound. It just quickly fades into the lowest RPM sound you have setup in your regular prs file. I have remixed some waves into a startup sound that I'm happy with and want to add it to the 190A. But I can't seem to make it work. I have defined my startup wave file inside the start.end prs file, and named the prs exactly how it has been done for the Sabre, Merlin XX, and DB 600 Series, except of course substituting in the BMW 800 Series name. But it's not playing in the game. Has something special been done to the Tempest, etc, which allows them to play a startup sound? Is there any way to make it work for other aircraft?

We think alike. I redid or at least remixed/tweaked most of the sounds you did too. Seeing your set may have given me a workaround. You have air_start_begin_00.wav as one of your sounds. I was aware that air_start_00.wav was the "winding up" sound and it is specified in the engine's main prs file. That can be seen as the 2nd of the 3 startup sounds. The first and especially the last one that I'm trying to get with the start.begin and start.end prs files are what I'm looking to control. What didn't work was my attempt to define them in the start.begin/end prs files like the Sabre has. But your air_start_begin_00.wav file is apparently the name of the default 1st startup sound. Knowing that, I figured that the 3rd sound's default name was air_start_end_00.wav, and it was. So I renamed my "coughing to life" sound as that, and it works. As I said, it's sort of a workaround, because it isn't really making a custom startup sound for the BMW 800 Series like the Sabre has, as this is actually just replacing the default startup sound for all aircraft, that don't have something custom specified. For my purposes, I pretty much only fly the 190A on a regular basis, so my startup sound serving as the default is okay. It'd sound weird if it transitioned into the P-40 idle sound or something, but that's not an issue for me.

Last night I was on with one of my squad mates trying to figure out how to make the custom sounds, like the Sabre has, work for the BMW 800 Series. He found that, among other files, the prs files are listed in the .preload file, in the files folder. We thought that maybe this file "activated" listed files when the game loads. The Sabre's custom start.begin/end prs files are listed here, and so we figured that we needed to add the BMW 800 Series start.begin/end prs files. It made sense (to us), but even with our new prs files listed in the .preload file it would not play the custom startup sound for the 190A. I'm not sure what the .preload file actually does, because I removed it (temporarily to the desktop), and the game still loaded and played fine without it. So I'm still stumped on how to make custom startup sounds for specific engine types. At least I can hear what I want by setting it as the default startup sound. Thanks for the link to your pack, as that's what sparked me being able to do that.
