making a gunsight from scratch - reticle - how to?
#1

I'd like to learn how to produce my own gunsight. Anyone willing to share some knowledge?

I understand there are many reticles around that I can simply use, but my interest is in the knowledge. I want to learn how to make it. Not simply get a new reticle.

I've tryed with success some editing on .tga reticle files of moded planes, but they are already moded. I'd like to learn how to make one for a plane that is not already moded.

thanks in advance

Ok, so if you have managed to edit a .tga file of a modded reticle then basically doing it for a plane which hasn't been moded yet is just the same... You need to extract all the 3do.sfs files then find the gunsight files. Extract the .tga so it's readable and then edit etc.... Then make a new folder with the same folder structure inside it as where u found the reticle.tga. Put the file in there and start up ur game and ur done...

When saving the new or edited reticule, do we need to save it with any special properties? I noticed that you can't open IL2's tga's with CS3, do we need to convert the new tga with a special program?

Thanks, F-22 Raptor. I'll get the tools and, if all goes well, give it a try this weekend.

Tesla, I opened some .tga on CS3 without problems. Maybe not he same files... who knows.

Not all the tga files are unreadable, yes some are readable. I don't know fully about this but if you can read it with photoshop then it should be fine otherwise you should convert it or you could see if you can convert the readable ones anyway, there may be some things locked that u can't see.

When you save it, save it as a normal .tga file 32bit i think i'm not quite sure but check the file size of the end file and it should be the same size as the original. Also if there are alpha channels etc save them all (there is a tick box on the save panel).
