Is is possible to add water textures?
#1

Hi all, I was just thinking, and wondering if it's possible to add more water textures for maps. Currently, we just have the deep and shallow water, which is fine for some maps, but for the atolls in the pacific, we really need more, as shown by this photo-

as you can see, the variation in the depth of the water is huge, and it would be REALLY nice if we could do this in-game. I'm thinking about getting into map modding, and possibly doing an accurate palau map, and as the photo shows, the shallow water we have in-game won't really work for the huge expanses of shallows in the map. If it's an engine limitation, I understand, but I'd really like to see this if it's possible.

Exactly what I'm playing with right now. Depending on the RGB of your water on map_c - use anything from 0 to 90-ish - it will give you a different impression of depth.

DG,

Would it be possible at some point for your to produce a series of screenshots showing water appearance correlated with map_c RGB value for both grey and blue water?

that would help the rest of us greatly.

It would, but free time is not a big commodity round here. If anyone else wants to do these water shots then jump right in. (Pun sort of intended  ).

dunkelgrun, those shallows look great.

Here, I threw this together quick- this shows rgb values in increments of 10, going from 10 to 130 left to right. Hope this helps!

*I'm also looking at reworking the midway map a little bit...

Thanks Jaypack, I'd probably have got round to it in a few weeks time - perhaps!

Mine is a 600 x 600 km campaign map with Midway in the centre. What sort of map were you looking to do?

Here's a few in-game shots of Pearl & Hermes Atoll; probably not too far from the finished article for this part of the map.

Wow, that looks really good! I was just planning on reworking the stock map a little bit, so nothing special. Just adding the shallows to the atoll and maybe a couple other quick fixes.

thanks, Jaypack. I d/l-ed your screen. Dunkelgrun, that looks amazing! Makes one want to go swimming!

Jaypack, would it be too much to ask for you to produce the same screens with grey European water as well?

Mandrill: I think that actually is the gray european water textures. I copied the water color lines from a desert map (don't remember which one) for the midway map because I liked the color better. I've tried this with different water colors, and the effect is the same either way, so I'm not sure if it makes that much of a difference, the only thing changed is the tint of the water, as far as I know.

Hmm, okay. Just wondering how to get the brown tint seen in rivers. Maybe that's just for rivers then and the game doesn't apply it to offshore water.

If any of you remember this thread, well, I finally got the map completed and it's available for download. viewtopic.php?t=22480
It's actually been finished for a few months, but as I made it for HSFX I wanted to get it released there first. I didn't realise that it's been over a year since I posted about making the reefs though  . Hope it's worth the wait!

Hi Jaypack44,

I'm currently working on the Palau stock map with a complete re-texture i've already made an origanal using srtm data and map builder but thought i would use the
stock map to experiment with before getting to work on my creation. I've managed to get 2 underwater textures on the same map, its still a wip and i haven't worked on
the textures in map c yet. Below is a pic of Bombsaways fabulous coral texture

Also i've managed to get Dunkelgruns new Midway coral texture on the same map so i can use both and blend them together, the second texture is very deep under the surface but i
can work on that in map c. In the pic below you can see Dunkelgruns texture under the surface in the distance also you can see Bombsaways coral textures around the islands.

Plus i can still keep the deep pacific blue water as well so it is possible to have at least 2 seperate underwater textures to play with and keep the deep ocean blue, before going to my
map c and workiing on the textures i'm going to try and introduce yet a third water texture, this all takes time and i've been messing about with water texts for months but finally
i'm beginning to get somewhere and i hope to be able to make water texturing as easy as land texturing with at least 3 underwater textures being used on any one map
