Just for the fun of it and because it's an overriding interest - here are some splashscreens featuring Spanish Civil War aircraft, both Republican and Nationalist, as well as one or two post war aircraft. Some of the planes are hacks (Ki-27 as Fokker D XXI for instance), but virtually all skins feature historical schemes and markings.

Nice, but some screens must be historically corrected... To be constructive:

-No rockets should be on I-15 and I-16...

-No Type 24 with Shvak. Type 18 looks externally very similar to Type 10 used here as "SuperMosca". But no radios on board except in a very rare case, and it was a receipt only radio.

-Chaikas should be flown with landing gear downed to match as possible the I-15, so Chaikas never flown in SCW.

-The "No tocar" (and not "No tocan") skin is taken from a picture where the plane was on the ground and "No tocar" ("Do not touch") was written on oone of the sides to avoid unauthorised ground personnel touch it.

-I think that Fiat G-50 was never captured by republicans.

-There is a mod converting CR-42 into CR-32, better depict that mod.

-I feel some SB-2M-100A missing!

-Never seen the cross marking on real captured or reconstructed I-15 on post-war...

-There were no mirrors on SCW Emils!


In general, there are lots of SCW skins. Some of them has been based on wrong profiles and it's very hard to say if a skin is correct or not. It's better to ignore profiles since more of them are wrong (about 50%), and center on real pictures for skin work.

But there also a minor percentage of fake pictures. One of the most famous is the I-16 CM-193 on flight. In fact, that's a russian Type 17...

Other known fact is the I-15 CA-125. Its numbers were not white. They were black... and so on.

Be careful on the fonts!

Much of this investigation has been done yet. I've got so many SCW skins on my folders that I don't know where to upload it.

Half of the members are real SCW historicians, authors of boooks that took years of investigation. The other half are modellers that also are investigating for more exactly painting their planes. Virtual skin modellers has just arrived to that forum.
There are people that know exact colours, markings, models in service, war actions... everything about SCW and post war planes, no matter how rare are them. All the info is out there...

Anyway, most of the skins I used were downloaded from other sites like Mission4Today or Flying Legends and being of a trusting nature I take them in good faith as they come. Il-2 is after all a game. [/img]

Yes, I'm pretty sure my graphics settings are at the max. What you probably see on the pix are the results of converting from a jpg screen capture, placing it into a tga file for use as a splashscreen, and then reconverting the tga back into a smaller sized jpg for purposes of posting in the forum.

There is bound to be some graphic quality loss along the way. And I also have a habit of flying with lots of low clouds, mostly at dawn or dusk. That often gives a hazy effect.

Thanks for suggesting though. I will have a look at my settings just to be sure.

Yes, the "No tocar" case is one of the kind I menctioned... this picture was misunderstood:



And somebody made the profile... wrong.

And later someone made the skin... wrong.

So this chain must be stopped at some point, or all we wil have historic markings wrong forever...

This plane is not on flight status. It has damage visible everywhere, and has no gunsight. Surely was an old I-16 destinated to fighter school at El Carmol

I think that sometimes I am so awfully tired and weary of the imposed seriousness of real-life, that it's a good idea to have something you can have fun with, amuse yourselves with, do just because you like it.

By the way - I wish you could convince my SO that Sturmovik is not only a game but something that should be taken (a bit more) seriously - for her it's still nothing more a little boy's pastime on an expensive machine. Nor is there any arguing with her ... ha ha.

You can take a simulator as a game, but you can't take a game as a simulator. You/she should fly for real... and compare.

I also like to see historically accurate information when playing Il-2, but I am open to what ifs and fun campaigns and skins as long as they are done well. Once you make a decision, it's all about pulling it off.

At the same time there is such a thing as artistic license, you can make a film, a play, a comic, or a campaign for Il-2 based on the Spanish Civil War, and not have it 100% historically accurate. Is Picasso's Guernica an accurate representation of the bombing?

There was a huge variety of aircraft in the SCW, and people enjoy using this to their advantage and making interesting skins that aren't necessarily historically accurate. No harm in that.
