The F-86 was designed specifically as a fighter, and was not in any way meant to be an interceptor.

Well, unfortunately that never stopped the US Air Force from naming their Fighter Squadrons at the time Fighter Interceptor Squadrons. It all depends on the role the plane was selected to fill. For instance, During the bulk of the Cold War, the F-4 Phantom II was designed as in interceptor though it carried the title Fighter. It's all in the employment. If you were assigned to an Air Defense Command unit, your were know as a FIS (pronounced FIZZ) If you were assigned to Tactical Air Command (for instance) you were designated as a Fighter Squadron or Tactical Fighter Squadron.

I know, it's just semantecs.
