A question on damage effects in IL2
#1

Note on forehand: If this involves any illegal DM adjustments, then please disregard this post.

Is it possible in IL2 to receive damage and have failures like;

- electrical system faillures
- hydraulic faillure
- faillure of specific engine parts other then oil/coolant propcontrol systems, like the super/turbocharger (example from the book "Farewell Mickey Mouse" by Len Deighton).

:?:

I was looking at some guncam footage, and noticed that in some occasions, a damaged aircraft suddenly drops it's landing gear.
It made me wonder if such things are even possible with the IL2 engine. But only if it does not involve any illegal DM modifications.

In the original IL2 Sturmovik game I recall to have seen it once, that an AI aircraft dropped it's gear, but that was on relatively low altitude. (but above a forest).

In the following footage at 2min10, 3min14:

Yeah, seeing the gear drop out would be cool. Funny you see that on one of the games flash screens when the game starts up. A Zeke or Zero is on fire and one gear is falling down.

It'd be nice to see this added, and to be honest it wouldn't really be something you could class as a cheat unless you're opposed to more frequent crash landings and bail-outs... :lol:

I remember when I used to play CFS3, nearly every time I took hits, my hydraulics were knocked out. I learned to land wheels-up very quickly, to say the least... the gear legs actually flopping out because of damage is something I don't recall ever seeing, though, and it'd be a welcome addition.

Perhaps if this isn't allowable for existing A/C, it could be implemented on some of the newer projects?

If this is not allow i think AAA have to review their rules, additions like this one should be allowed, as are not cheat or give any advantage in online play.

What do you mean with hydraulic failure, isn't that already in-game? Except if you are referring to "random" failures...

This would definately be considered a DM modification, and so would be 'illegal' here. Which is a shame, although I completely understand why. Enhancing the damage model would bring greadt deal of realism to the sim. More advanced engine management as well as many other things would be fantastic, but I think we should hope to see these in SOW, as I don't think it will ever be sanctioned at AAA.

I'd like to see canopies blown apart, and ball turrets shot off. more graphic plane damage.

just imagine how much more intense bomber missions would be...

I think it is. I can only say that I think it is because it seems no matter how shot up I am, my gear still comes down (unless a leg has been shot off, which I've seen once). That said, I never try to drop my gear for engine-out landings, so it might not come down then...

It is. Happens occasionaly, the gear wouldn't lower anymore and you have to do it manually...

Which A/C? I mainly fly the Spit, and it seems no matter how badly shot up I get, it still lowers... the only time I've seen it do otherwise was when one of my wingmen actually had the left leg shot clean off.

Oh and dont forget, oxygen damage!! A hit in the bottle or somewhere in the system and you would have to descend very fast to 10000feet (3000m) or you will pass out! Maybe the black out screen can be used for that?

I'm not talking about any "random failures" here, only the failures caused by battle damage due to hits taken to the aircraft.

The only thing i've experienced once so far, on the gear-damage, was that 1 wheel+gearstrut was shot out of my wing completely by a flak hit. Confusedhock:

Apart from that, no matter how shot up you are, the landing gear will come down, in my experience so far through the years with the IL2 series.

In regard to the other faillures I listed;
If the electrical system gets hit, the flaps would get stuck, lights/instruments would fail. - even guns could not fire on some occasions.

The supercharger/turbocharger systems could get damaged/disabled - forcing you to fly below certain altitudes.

Failing hydraulics could mean jammed flaps, dropping down gear, perhaps gun faillures (idk if there were any aircraft with hydraulic gunsystems.

Anders_And's idea of oxygen damage could imply the same - the effect of blacking out would be very cool and immersive.

But I would like to see an official statement on this, in regards to Potenz' reply in this topic.

So, anyone around who can provide a little more insight on this? Smile

I'd love to see the various systems able to be damaged that way, it'd make for some really challenging flying trying to get your plane down safely... and what may be water under the bridge for one could spell doom for another (hydraulic hit in a Spit would only prevent gear cycling, it could be pumped; brakes and flaps were pneumatic... in the later Spiteful, all three were hydraulic).

Official statement?

I would imagine, if implimented correctly, this would be fine. As long as it didn't touch the FM files of the stock aircraft - this would be seen as a cheat given site policy...

Additional damage elements would be nice, are unlikely in a physical sense, but I am aware of extra engine damage being added... As I said, if implimented without touching individual aircraft's FM files, it could possibly be ok here, following approval of the staff that it doesn't incroach on the rules...
