Help is on the way

For my first story I'll focus on the one thing that is most enjoyable about IL2: Teamwork.

My wingman (beerbuzz) and I lifted off under busy skies. We were leaving an airfield near bastogne and we had some real threats overhead. There were reports of an element of 109s flying overhead doing lots of damage to the squad. I took my 190 to 2500m and my partner's Spit was 12 o'clock low. We're flying directly towards a reported enemy base and no sign of the 109s. We see tracers below however I radio to buzz to stay high and pick out a lone bogey and we'll tag team him and zoom back to over 2000. He IDs a slow moving FW that must have just taken off and so down we go. First pass for buzz scores some hits with both cannons and guns. I come through 4 seconds after and finish him off with direct hits to his wing structure.

After reclaiming some alt, we begin to look again but somehow we have co-alt spitfires coming in for a go at us. I had a bit more alt, they both went for buzz. As I engaged, Spit #2 disengaged my wingman and I knew he was surely just setting me up. I knew I had to kill this spit on Buzz's tail in one pass as it was going to be my only chance and if I missed, it could mean virtual death for both of us. I radioed buzz and asked him to set me up by bringing his bogey hard left so that I could easily engage. 2 seconds before i made it into firing range the bogey began firing on buzz, buzz radioed that he's hit and I zoom into range and let that spit have it. I didn't miss. His plane folded like a cheap suit under the FW190's firepower. I told buzz to begin to dive a bit to get more speed till we can locate this other spit which is sure to be upset now that his buddy is down. I found him at 12 o'clock and about 1000 meters above and I began trading speed for alt. I couldn't make up the ground so we disengaged him after about a 45 second effort.

Buzz headed for home and I covered him as he prepared for landing. I sat my bird down to reload as well and so for us, that was a successful sortie.

That's something I sorely miss as an offline player. You ask your flight to attack... Nope, they're ignoring me and flying home. Send a message to ground control and ask for assistance. Yes, they tell me, but the other flights do their own thing. Somebody, help me! They tell me they'll be right there. What? Tomorrow? It's tough being an offline flight commander... Sad

I know what you mean about offline flying. It seems like a different game all together from online IL2.

Yep, Il2 is "ok" offline, but it truly is best played online.
