The Lancaster

Bo_Nidle Wrote:Does anyone else remember the "Target for Tonight" project that was being developed for IL2 but then died a quiet death?

I recall seeing pictures of a Lancaster that appeared fully 3D modeled, at least externally.

I have had a quick look on the net but cannot find any trace of it now.

Anyone know what happened to it?

A great pity. Cry

Too bad you couldn't latch onto the models from the abandoned Target for Tonight sim, but that was back several years ago. I found a site [http://www.lavaproductions.com/LAVAGallery.html] that shows the Lanc from it but looks like the site hasn't ben updated in several years also.

Would be nice to have British bombers and nightfighters.

Been a while since I've been on any forum so I apologize if I screwed up the link.

I was peripherally involved in Target for Tonight (since I was just learning to model). It folded because the Lead programmer did not seem to want to accept help, and it was too big a project to run as a one man show. Most of the remaining members formed 242 Squadron flying this sim. Not many continued with the bomber dream. I think Lewis (Louis?) was the member who made the Lanc, and I also believe he's one of the moderators (or at least a frequent contributor) at the Shockwave Productions site. Unless my facts are completely hosed, he's also the modeler who made the TBM/TBF that Maddox decided not to use (probably part of that whole trademark scare with Grumman). Like I said, I wasn't an actual member at the time, so my facts may be shakey.

Bringing this marvelous idea back to the top...

I'm not a modder or anything, but I have some ideas that might be helpful...

Starting by the cockpit, the Mosquito IV, with the blisters, seems to be a good choice (at least for starting point).

When talking about engines, the one used at the abandoned Fairey Firefly mod shall fit better than Tempest's one, as the radiator intake is smaller and not as round as in Hawker Tempest.

It's hard to suggest anything when talking about the wings, as I don't know if there's anyway to set the outer section of the wings to point slightly up.

Stealing the nose of the Wellington mod, and then modify it, might work...

The present tail section is looking good (well, the elevators trepassing the rudder aren't really nice, but I guess it's not that hard to get'em in the right place, and it's a minor problem...), but the Pe-8's rear gunner doesn't seem to fit very well. The Liberator one is just perfect (well, the number of guns might be a problem, as there were four instead of two, but again, no big deal).

I hope it doesn't sound too arrogant, the problem is English is not my native language, so I don't know how to express myself right. These are just some stupid suggestions, please don't misunderstand what I said

It is a great idea, that's why a huge quantity of work has been put in for a very long time to put the Lanc into the game. It's another of the aircraft that Magpie and co are working on, and the latest build is currently being put into the game...check the WIP Mods Discussion for more info, although bear in mind that is no dedicated Lancaster thread there at the moment.

Reading the forums widely is your friend
