Why such a FPS hit ???
#1

Hi all,

Can someone please explain to me why these new cockpit repaints cause such a FPS hit on my system?
I have just installed Freddys new P51B/C new cockpit and its caused a noticable drop in FPS for me. I understand it is far more detailed than the original pit, but it has dropped my frame rate considerably.
Here's my point.... The unmodded stock pits for alot of the Pacific fighters and 1946 aircraft are equally as detailed if not more so than these new cockpits that are appearing ie stock DO 335, FW 190, KI 61, etc etc etc.
So if these stock pits don't affect my FPS badly, why do the new ones that have similar detail in them ???

Thanks for any help clearing this up for me.

Bigger textures.

To be more specific, bigger textures that only use 25% of the texture, so 75% memory waste.

that cockpits are only for high end PC's and many textures are 1024x1024 thats 4 mb for 1 texture so yes its memory waste.

He would have needed to save them as indexed tgas, that results in a file size of only 1MB at 1024x1024 without any loss of quality.

Have you looked at the TGA's? Yes, they are 1024x1024, but there is one texture on it in the bottom left and it covers 1/4, measuring 512x512. So he's using 4MB but could have used 1MB without loss of quality.

If what Zorin suggest is applied to the 512x512 size texture, it would then result in a file of 256kB?

Correct.

I don't know if he has access to Max, cause the best solution would have been to map the stuff so that all those lines and badges fit on a single 1024x1024 texture, which would result in one file of 1MB without any difference in quality.

Freddie's cockpits are very pretty and very detailed, but the way he's done them causes a much higher FPS hit than most modded cockpits.

...it is because he uses multiple textured meshes for representing new objects .... for example his mesh calls 3 or 4 tga files ( one with actual pic and rest are just transparent ) . Usually there are five or more such "new" cockpit objects introduced , hence FPS loss .

at least that was the case with Bf 109's ...

all new meshes (PoppedPanel_XX.msh) are using :ZClocks1.tga ZClocks2.tga ZClocks3.tga ZClocks6.tga and only one is actual texture file .

Hello there

I have the same problem , especially with the P51B Cockpit.
Is there any way to resize the cockpit myself ?
Which tga's has to be rezized ?
How should I do ?

well, you can resize all tga's to 512x512 ( or even 256 x 256 ) but it wouldn't result with much improvement FPS wise ....

only improvement in FPS will come if Freddy decides to rework his pits and use single textured meshes ( one mesh + one tga + one mat) instead of present ones

Okay , I'll try out .
With 2 ou 3 FPS when sitting in the office I do not think I take a risk trying Big Grin

Thanks a lot
