Replacing the Generic US Aircraft Carrier
#1

Has anyone looked into replacing the generic US Carrier in one of the unified installer updates? The generic US Carrier is just a copy of the post-overhaul USS Saratoga which is already in the game and makes this choice of Generic US Carrier historically useless.

There were only two Lexington Class Fleet Carriers built:

CV3 USS Saratoga commisioned first followed by CV2 USS Lexington.

Each began with 4 turrets of twin 8" guns, a pair on each end of the Island.

The game's USS Lexington is accurate up to April 1942 when her 8" guns were hastily removed during an availability because it was determined that the 8" guns were useless against aircraft. The 8" guns were replaced by quad 1" AA gun batteries (referred to as "Chicago Pianos") in the locations previously occupied by the 8" gun turrets . This was her configuration during the Coral Sea where she was sunk a month after receiving these new guns batteries.

The game's USS Saratoga is accurate after her Bremerton Washington overhaul in March or April 1942 where the 8" guns were replaced by four 5" twin dual Purpose gun turrets. She kept this configuration for the remainder of the war.

I think better options for a US Generic carrier would be to:
1. Change the generic carrier to a generic Essex Class Carrier
2. Change the generic carrier to a generic Yorktown Class (Yorktown, Enterprise, Hornet)
3. Choose options 1 & 2.

Just my thoughts

I agree that the Yorktown and Essex class carriers would be more in line with the primary use carriers for WWII (and Korea for that matter)

But is it worth the effort? Smile

Hi!

I agree with this but I think that if someone will take the work is better that he mod the Yorktown because we have the late carriers in game anyhow and the Yorktown , Enterprise , Hornet are of great importance for early war scenario!

I agree 100% Mailman. The Sara is a poor example of a "generic" US aircraft carrier during WWII. How many Essex class ships were active by the end of the war? 20+? There were 11 CVLs, and God only knows how many Jeep carriers. The Sara was definitely a poor choice.

Yes, they should have used, perhaps, the Essex.

Is it possible to replace the USS Lexington with a Yorktown Carrier (USS Enterprise would be best) and the generic US carrier with the USS Essex?
