[REQUEST] B5N2 in a new slot
#1

Hy!

As you most of all know, we have flyable B5N2 since the mod story started. It's FM is
very unstable and lacks some of it's basic flying capabilites (trim, level
stabalizer). As this plane had a major role as a carrier based torpedo/level bomber in
the early/mid Pacific battles (from 300 planes involved in Pearl Harbor attack, 144
were B5N2 torpedo bombers) I think that new plane would open a new world of PTO
missions and campaigns that player could taste and feel the immersion as a Japansese
carrier based bomber pilot (we allready have a D3A ''Val'' included in stock Il-2).
So I'm writing this request and I hope some of you modders find a time AND interest in
making this plane in a new slot.

I don't know how much of information you allready have nor have much of information do
you need, but now please let me paste some pictures and information regarding this
plane.

This plane was used as a torpedo bomber and also as a level bomber.
Single-engined three-seat carrier-borne torpedo-bomber. All-metal construction with fabric-covered control surfaces.

Production: A total of 1,149 B5Ns (including B5N1)

Plane was operated by 3 persons (pilot, navigator/bombardier and a rear gunner).
It's official IJN name was Type-97 carrier attack bomber, American codename was ''Kate''.

I would suggest using rate of climb (ROC) and maximum true airspeed (TAS) form this FM we allready have in game, I'm posting some pics from il-2 compare:

ROC:

Max TAS:

In-game characteristics:

I'm posting some cockpit shots (I'm not requesting new cocpit-it's extra)
If there is anybody interested in more cockpit shots feel free to PM me.

Bombardier:

Weapons used (I suggest using weapons allready in game):

Armament:

* One flexible rear-firing 7.7 mm Type 92 machine-gun.
* Bomb-load: 800 kg of bombs or one 800 kg torpedo.

6x30 kg bombs
6x50 kg bombs
3x100 kg bombs
1x250 kg bomb
1x500 kg bomb
1x600 kg bomb
torpedo type 91 (800 kg (1,764 lb))

Ok, that's it, I helped as much as I can, if more questions please write here or PM me.

Thanks for your attention,

S!

The Kate has all the basics. That's how they flew in WW2 (you can argue how accurate the flight model is).

This was an unsophisticated early war aeroplane flown by japanese pilots who preffered the no-nonsense hands-on flying. It wasn't designed with trim surfaces, which are actually something of a luxury, though a very welcome one.

Except of FM. It is horrible, as at some other AC which were unflyable before modding.
So I support the request of new slot.

Laziness is the mother of progress. My QMB missions can be found here:

It does not necessarily have to ba a new slot. If it would by the rules of this community be possible to simply modifie the FM, we can keep the old slot, no?
And while we are on this topic, the Avenger somehow feels like the Buffalo from which it got it's cockpit from....

By the rules of the comunity, it is prohibited to modify FM or DM of ANY aircraft included in Il-2.
We can only hope for a new slot...

A new slot and appropriate FM would be great for this one. So would a decent cockpit too. The Shiden one just doesn't cut it.

B5N2 had the trim controls and Kate was at the start of the war, one of the most modern navy planes.
It was also the first Japanese plane with completely hydraulic landing gear system.

i fully support this. I would even agree to just the fm and no new cockpit, if it's necessary.

Sure, it was modern in the Sino-Japanese war, but by 1941, the Kate was nearly obsolete. The only reason it served out the rest of the war was because the B6N had develompent trouble. As far as I can find, it didn't have trim controls. You're right about the hydraulic landing gear. It also had hydraulic folding wings. However, both had severe problems leading to several modifications making both manually operated.

+100% !! New slot, or not, I don't care. But it is a shame that the Kate and Jill are such pieces of crap to fly! Sad

If someone does decide to give this plane a new slot with a "flyable" FM (such as is already widely available on the net) I would hope that they include the Jill and TBF as well. Just fixing the FM and leaving the planes in their original slot does not seem to me to be a threat to the IL-2 community at large. It's not like they would be receiving increased performance. The un-modded player, if he were to encounter one of these online would not be disadvantaged at all. He would see a plane flying the same speeds and with the same performance he is used to seeing with the AI. I don't understand why the fix couldn't just be put into the next version of the Aircraft Installer. :?

New slot for this plane would be most welcome. Online we'd still have to use old B5N tho.

Actually, the B5N had trim controls for all three axes. In the photo (from a "Kate" captured at Aslito A/F on Saipan in '44), the aileron & rudder trim controls are far left (the aileron trim is the knobbed lever; the rudder the more conventional nubbed "wheel" type). Unfortunately for the pilot, the more-often-used elevator trim control was higher on the port side and more difficult to access. You can just see the lever for it in the extreme upper left of the photo.

I would add my plea for this plane to be added in the "new slot" category. It was the most important IJN carrier-borne attack plane of the war, in that the Japanese put much more stock in torpedo-bombing than they did dive-bombing ships, and no other later IJN torpedo-bomber had much impact on the already-lost war. (And, my shoulder gets pretty sore after flying it for over an hour, with the constant "down & right" stick input needed to keep it in the air Smile )
