Spitfire V mod and/or skin suggestion
#1

Please feel free to verbally flog me if this has already been suggested or done:

Mod:
Spitfire Vb-Trop (with the big chin filter and 60 rpg for the 20mm cannon. These were the aircraft originally flown into Malta in March '42 - not the Vc-Trop, they came later, in April '42)

Spitfire Vc without the Trop filter such as the one seen below and flown by Peter Prosser Hanks during late '42 at Malta. (such an aircraft would have 120 rpg for the 20mm cannon)

Skin:
The PP-H Spit above is the skin suggestion. According to "Malta Spitfire Aces" it was tied for the highest scoring spitfire on the island. It would currently work as a skin for the Vb.

Thanks

I'm going out with some mates for a bit, I'll make that skin when I get home. Smile

Was the lettercode reversed on the other side (as it seems was common from about 1941 on) or not?

Thanks, I'll check on that and get back to you.

I guess I only have pictures of it on it's left side.
He was a Wing Leader and so I would guess - based on Ian Gleed's Spit Vb, and Robert S. Tuck's - that the right side was PP-roundel-H.

The 'C' - wing was designed to have 120 rounds per gun as standard, whilst the 'B' wing only had 60 rounds. As for the trop filter, the vast majority of Vc were made with them, though quite a few were shipped without them and later modified with the Aboukir filter.

Don't know the possibility of doing a hack job to get it without the filter, but it might possibly need a mesh edit to do so.

This one (Malta defender skin) is a sort of Mk.Vb Trop. Mirror is still wrong and cannons could be reworked a little.

Thought as much, but I wanted to be sure.

I've started, should have some progress worth showing within the next day or two - I'm a slow worker Tongue

Those are great. I've got 'em and I love them. They do, however, have the "C" wing with 120 rpg (20mm) instead of the "B" wing with 60 rpg. No big deal. I just thought it would be a fairly easy mod if someone was interested. (I don't know how difficult it is really since I've never done mods for Il2).

It's not a C Wing, it's the same from Seafire. The desertic Spit has a type C.

Progress so far - I'm an idiot and forgot to adjust the codes to compensate for the warped UVW coords, I'll do it later - colours aren't final and probably aren't accurate either, if you could find out exactly which they were it'd be a huge help as several shades of the various RAF greys are close matches for the profile.

rossmum,

Looks great so far! thanks again.

Two things; Despite the color profile I provided, I'm fairly certain that it did not have yellow leading edges, since I've never seen a picture of a Malta based Spit that had that marking.
Also I think the colors are probably fairly close. According to several sources, most Spits at Malta in '42 were repainted with various dark blue and dark gray shades for over water flying. Some good examples of the color shading are in this skin pack called "Malta Defenders" http://mission4today.com/index.php?name ... ls&id=4768

For the Vb Trop the cannon return stops need removing.

As for the Vc (Trop) it would be a nice alteration for the inner cannon to be removed and the outer left.
It would be neat for the Volkes filter to be removed so we could use the aircraft over Europe
