have you installed any new planes recently?
more specifically, have you used a new buttons file recently?
afaik, you might get missing engine sounds if you are using the wrong buttons file, which in turn might use different prs file settings, which would account for losing engine sounds on some AC, in my case it was most of the Hurricanes, Spits and Beaufighters, but others lost sounds for different AC.
Which mod version are you using?

Yes installed new AC...but first noticed some sounds on A6M's missing a long time ago. Now probably 1/2 my AC sounds are missing; P47 P40 F6F.
Havent been too concerned up till now as only focused on flying P51.
Using 409b. Unified installer 3.8.
So maybe its something to do with buttons file?

yes the buttons file contains the engine files, and they in turn contain the references to what sounds to use for what engine.

In this is the big (only) difference between the various types of mod activator. They all use different names for different sounds, so a buttons file for one type of mod activator on another system, will have the effect of directing the engines to soundfiles that does not exist.

So unless youve been wantonly deleting files from your presets and samples folders lately, you have the wrong buttons file.

and next time please post this sort of thing in the technical help section. I know it says "seek assistance" in the header, but they should remove that still , as it is a oversight from the old forum.

OK, I have replaced some engine sounds with modded ones, but havent deleted any otherwise. Does this mean I need to change / replace buttons file?
(sorry for posting in wrong place, point taken)

that depends. did you replace the .wav files, or did you replace the .eff files.
You must be quite carefull what sound sets you use, but generally, if it is not applicable to your modactivation system, it wont affect you.

You still have to tell us what mod activator you use.(I presume "unified installer 3.8" refers to the type of buttons file you use)

But, in the end, what I am 99.9 % sure is the problem, you installed the wrong buttons file for you. Install the right one and the problem SHOULD be fixed. Which is the right one? well there are ony 6 choices, so go for it! And visit the technical sections FAQ list, for a link to the AC_installer explained thread.
