[MOD] OLC FPS Boost V2
#1

V2 is now available (if you already have V1, delete it before installing this version). This version works with both cloud types and both texture compression types (thanks to ZloyPetrushkO) and also fixes an incorrect flag setting in V1 which could have caused clouds to lose some detail, depending on other settings.

Download V2 here:

http://www.filefront.com/14171223/OLC-FPS-Boost-V2.rar/

This little mod can considerably boost the framerates of those players who use texture compression (texcompress>0 in conf.ini) by enabling texture compression on the clouds. Players using modded clouds and/or typeclouds=1 (in conf.ini) will see the greatest FPS gains, especially in bad weather, but this mod will give some FPS improvement with all other cloud settings as well. Check out the FPS counters in these screens...

NORMAL clouds (i.e. WITHOUT this mod enabled)

FPS BOOSTED clouds (i.e. WITH this mod enabled)

Drop this mod in your MODS folder and you're all set. It is compatible with most cloud mods, but if you are using a cloud mod which contains any of the files Cloud.mat, Cloud4x4.mat or Cloud4x4_nosort.mat then you will need to delete those files from your cloud mod in order for this mod to work.

Enjoy! 8)

I'm using Flushy's Cloud mod and it has a clouds4x4.tga file in there. Is the TGA the same as the MAT file, should it be deleted for this to work?

No, the TGA is not the same as the MAT file and it should not be deleted!

@ZloyPetrushkO
Sure, post links wherever, or just include your own version of cloud4x4.mat in your mod.
BTW, I think the extra tweak you added will only work for those using 16bit compression (which, from your shots, it looks like you are using).

@Neil
Let me know what your FPS results are. Smile

yes, i think so Smile
i think, if don't using 16bit compressions there results are same as your version.
but i think some people too use 16 bit, and it will be useful Smile

i reposted my 1st post in some time. i want get some addtional test Smile
i added link to this thread, and link for my version. i think each man can choose Smile

Sure. I've edited post #1 of this thread to include a link to your version, with credit to you and a note explaining that yours will work with 16bit texture compression.

BTW could you please edit your post above to get rid of those labels saying "Share these images on twitter!"

thanks for this mod!

another area where you are able to gain fps is the filesize of the clouds4x4.tga, I use a 256Kb version which still looks good (original size which is included in the cloudmods is 4Mb iirc)

I tried lower resolutions but there's a big drop in image quality.

This mod doesn't change image quality (at least, not that I can see on side-by-side zoomed-in screenshots) so it's a "free" FPS boost for anyone using texture compression. But yes, lowering the resolution of the cloud textures does increase the FPS even more. Smile
