[MOD] OLC FPS Boost V2
#16

I am interested in anything that will help FPS.

However, I find that I don't have TypeClouds=1 and my TexCompress=0 shows in my conf.ini file.

I am running in Perfect mode, so I wonder what does it take to get those.

Here is what my confi.ini file looks like.

Quote:[Render_OpenGL]
TexQual=3
TexMipFilter=2
TexCompress=0
TexFlags.UseDither=1
TexFlags.UseAlpha=0
TexFlags.UseIndex=0
TexFlags.PolygonStipple=1
TexFlags.UseClampedSprites=0
TexFlags.DrawLandByTriangles=1
TexFlags.UseVertexArrays=1
TexFlags.DisableAPIExtensions=0
TexFlags.ARBMultitextureExt=1
TexFlags.TexEnvCombineExt=1
TexFlags.SecondaryColorExt=1
TexFlags.VertexArrayExt=1
TexFlags.ClipHintExt=0
TexFlags.UsePaletteExt=0
TexFlags.TexAnisotropicExt=1
TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=1

TexFlags.TexEnvCombine4NV=1
TexFlags.TexEnvCombineDot3=1
TexFlags.DepthClampNV=1
TexFlags.SeparateSpecular=1
TexFlags.TextureShaderNV=1

HardwareShaders=1

Shadows=2
Specular=2
SpecularLight=2
DiffuseLight=2
DynamicalLights=1
MeshDetail=2
VisibilityDistance=3

Sky=2
Forest=2
LandShading=3
LandDetails=2

LandGeom=2
TexLarge=1
TexLandQual=3
TexLandLarge=1

VideoSetupId=3
Water=2
Effects=1
ForceShaders1x=0
PolygonOffsetFactor=-0.15
PolygonOffsetUnits=-3.0

Could you please tell me what I am missing ?

Thanks

TypeClouds=1 is explained in the game manual. It goes in the [game] section (not the [Render_OpenGL] section) of conf.ini, and it gives better looking clouds for a drop in performance. Even with this mod, TypeClouds=1 will be slower than the default clouds which you have now with TypeClouds=0 (the default). So if you are looking for more FPS than you have with TypeClouds=0 then this mod won't help you. But if you're looking for a way to enable TypeClouds=1 without getting such a big drop in FPS, then this mod is just what you need. Wink

Ok, so this might be a dumb question, but I had set my config.ini per some recommendation years ago (almost the same as KC's, but no dither either), and I have clouds=1 & TexCompress=0 also. Is there any advantage to using texcompress in the first place, or is this just for cards with low memory (I thought I remembered that using compression was a low memory workaround)?

thnx

IL2 will use a pretty huge amount of VRAM with TexCompress=0 (even by modern standards) but if you have a PCIe card and lots and lots of VRAM then TexCompress=0 is probably the way to go. I say "probably" but the bottom line is you just won't know which is best for your machine until you try setting TexCompress=2 and doing an FPS test. If you do try TexCompress=2 then make sure you also set TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=1 (otherwise TexCompress=2 won't do anything).

BTW, TexCompress=1 should be avoided IMO.

There seems to be a lack of decent conf.ini guides on the web. Maybe I'll write one.

Thanks so much !

Game manual ? :?

I am learning more and more from here from good people like you onelifecrisis !

Video-card talk goes over my head and I go in a "dither" (forgive my pun) Big Grin

But I might just try the TexCompress=2 along with your other suggestions to see what will happen. I have a 7600GS (512mb) video card.

Again my "Thanks"

Ok, I'll set up a test track and see what happens. Thanks.

Yup, that's right. Did you read the first post of this thread?

The download contains a folder called "FPS Boost" or something like that, and the file you see is in one of the subfolders. You need to drop the "FPS Boost" folder into your mods folder (not just the cloud4x4 file on it's own).

I've done this and found a good conf set up for ati cards which has drastically improved my frames with perfect landscape settings

Thanks!
