Up graded video card
#1

Hi again,
I decided to up grade the default nvidia 9800gt to the new nvidia gtx 260. Will I get really juicy water and really good or perfect graffics with this card? Will it be really fast?

Thanks!

PS very excited!

I replaced my 8800GT with a GTX 260. While the 260 gave me some better numbers in some benchmark programs, but I really didn't see much difference in IL2. I'm using a Core 2 Duo running at 3.6 Ghz ... I saw much more improvement in performance by over clocking my CPU than switching video cards. Maybe you will see better results than I did.

I have the Core duo E6850 3.0 Ghz but have never tried to overclock it....do you need extra cooling??

Hi,

I replaced an 8800gts 320MB with a GTX260 216. Noticed a nice improvement in frame rates and fluidity.

Using a Core 2 Duo E8200 at 2.66 Ghz + 4GB ram, 1680x1050, I run the game on perfect settings, 8-16XAA, 16XAF, landgeom=3. water=2.

Putting water=3 doesn't work too well - stuttering. May be able to use it if i reduced some other settings - haven't tried.

I think my current settings are my limit with this card.

I think that il-2 will love your new video card! Just make sure though that your processor is good enough to get the most that you can out of it Wink

Hey liamp51,

If you would like a nice GTX 260, take a look at this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130497

1792MB, instead of the 890MB

 and good luck finding a decent graphics card Big Grin

It's highly advisable. I overclocked my E6850 to 3.6 Ghz, it runs well below maximum allowable temps. My cooler is a Xigmatek S-1283. Not the greatest cooler in the world, but not the worst, price was good and it works quite well unless you are going for extreme overclocking. I also use an Antec 900 case, stock fans with the front two running as intakes at medium speeds, the top and rear fans as exhaust running at low speed.

I think the better FPS/$ is GF275, check frequency memory, higth is better.

It really depends on how much extra heat is generated by the overclocking. I had a e5200 which ran a stock speed of 2.6, I had it running at 3.2 with less than 5 degrees increase in temperature under load - on the stock cooler. The coolers which come with the modern intel CPUs are very good, but decent air flow through the case is highly recomended.

On my new laptop I will have a core 2 duo processor (t6400) running at 2ghz per core. Will I be able to overclock this?

Do you think that having a faster processor would run water=3 fine?

I've not tried overclocking a laptop. I would think that cooling could very quickly become an issue with a laptop.

OK, thanks for the info Wink

Ok 1st whatever you do dont in gods name try to oveclock a laptop, you will kill it.
Secondly you Must use a custom cooler or fan to cool your cpu as high temps are bad for cpus and will reduce the life of them, i use a custom akasa amber series cooler which has manual speed control, i also use vram heatsinks for the memory chips on my graphics card.
If you look at my pc specs below you will see that i have put "oc" next to my cpu and my graphics card because i overclocked them, it has done wonders i now get 127fps at 1280x1024 on perfect settings. Be warned though overclocking can damage or kill your pc if done incorrectly but usually its safe. The danger comes from raising the core voltage to increase the stability of your cpu as you increase the clock speed. Too much voltage will damage your cpu and always increases the heat output, this opens a whole new can of worms. Your best bet is to search overclocking on google. There are always pros and cons to overclocking.
