Help With crash after community installer & patch applie

Just bought IL-2 1946 from direct-2-drive. after trying out the demo.

Running win98. Radeon 9000 card.

game works fine off the clean install. ver 4.08

after installing the community installer and then unified 1.1 patch the game will not load - stops at 60 %

if i am using open gl there is no opening screenshot, just whitescreen with loading numbers in red text and i get an error message after crash:

If i am using directx support there is an opening screenshot but no error message in crash

both kick out at 60% and the load time is significantly slower than when starting on the clean install.

I am failry new to dealing with these technical issues, but if anyone would be able to point me to the right direction? is this a mod install problem? an error with my java package? or video card problem?

any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

it is supposed to be slower after 1.1
anyway, your gfx could use an update for this one. also 2G DDR is recommended
