Spitfire update pack?
#1

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has considered making or is working on a Spitfire update pack? The Spitfire V and IX models in particular are showing their age, and could really use a reworking. Maybe replace the MkIX models with adapted versions of the much nicer MkVIII model?

Other features like opening canopies for all the Spitfires would be nice, because while all the new Spitfire variants such as the MkI, MkXII and MkXIV and Seafire II have opening canopies none of the official versions do, and it really adds to immersion when you can open the canopy as you come in to land or are taking off, like so many pictures show pilots doing.

Finally, it would be good to see bubble canopied versions of the Spitfire, because while there is a bubble canopy available for the MkIXe, it is an old Frankenplane mod and looks rather ugly compared to the beautiful mods being produced now. I believe the creator of the Spitfire XIV mod is working on a bubble canopied variant, and wasn't the XIV created by modding a VIII? If this is the case it should be quite possible to transfer this new canopy to a new MkIX model created from the MkVIII model to make some of the later MkIX variants and a MkXVI.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Many updates are underworks, but they all take time. There is a bubblehood mod for the Mk IXe. Opening canopies is on the early models (Mk I to Mk Va), the MkXIVs and some of the seafires, plus all new models in UI1.2 will have them.

As for the ease of it, nope it isn't easy at all! Wait in good time and you will be given the gold at the end of the rainbow, though the rainbow may be very long and keep on moving

opening canopy for the default planes such as spit VIII will need a fm change so that won't be happening.

The Spitfire Mk I needs an adjustment of the FM. It has this rather strange landing behaviour, rearing up just before touching down, making the landing rather long, sometimes even causing a crash.

Hope there will be new FM for mayority of BOB planes in U.I. 1.2 as it is yet in other mod sites ...

I was thinking more along the lines of creating new slot versions of the default Spits using adapted versions of the MkVIII anyway, maybe I should have stated this specifically to avoid confusion.

I don't know a great deal about the process of making mods, but I'm curious as to how adding an opening canopy to an aircraft is changing the FM?

The FM is like the config file for your il2 game. Basically in there there is a line which says this "Canopy = 0" if it was 1 then it would open assuming you have the relevant class files to animate the movement of it. There are other things like wing area, breakup speed and stuff like that in the fm.

Oh okay, I see what you mean now, I thought the term Flight Model meant just the handling and performance, I didn't realise it was also related to things like the canopy opening, which is more of a visual feature than anything else.

But this is something that could be done relatively easily I'm guessing, since all the new Spitfires seem to have this feature?

Would it be possible to take the files concerning opening canopies from either the MkXII or MkXIV, since these are both derived from the MKVIII, and replace the default MkVIII canopy files with these to allow the MkVIII to have an opening canopy? This mod could replace or be added to the MkVIII.FB so that this wouldn't be modifying the FM of a default plane.
