nvidia vs ati question
#1

...I know that in the past the il2 game likes nvidia cards better than ati in general, ...was wondering if nowadays the new ati cards are performing as good as the nvidia's, thinking about perfect settings with water 4 ectr..., i just read a review about the ati radeon 5870 , it sounds like a killer card

,with regards miker8

i dont know if this is in your price range, but i run an ATI 4890 vapor-x 2gb and it runs il2 on minimum 90fps Big Grin

i think you really can buy a newer ATI card, they are really cheap and run IL2 good, so no problem here but i think they cant run on Water 4 i think,

you guys have amzing graphics.
I'll always buy ATI cards, currently have the 4870 (512 mb ram) and can't get my graphics to be the max my card can give (without dropping under 30 fps and actually lagging when moving my head with trackIR.

In the conf.ini, what are your OPENGL settings?
mine below:

[Render_OpenGL]
TexQual=3
TexMipFilter=3

HardwareShaders=1

Shadows=2
Specular=2
SpecularLight=2
DiffuseLight=2
DynamicalLights=1
MeshDetail=2
VisibilityDistance=3

Sky=2
Forest=2
LandShading=3
LandDetails=2

LandGeom=3
TexLarge=1
TexLandQual=3
TexLandLarge=1

Water=1
Effects=2

ATI is a great videocard, but when it is Opengl to run, then Nvidia has better performances

nvidia can handle water better, u can set up to 5 in the water setting, personally i prefer nvidia, i got an ati and cant run high resolution, no matter what i do without lag, specially on 4.09 maps, and just a note, the 109 has a shadow bug, try another aircraft.

thx for the reply m8's, ...i know already how water4,5 looks like [ Potenz ,think its water3 , water4,5 has white cuffs on my screen], i've got a nvidia gtx280 so everything is in perfect settings all maxed out no stutters, but my question was, can the newer ati cards ...or do anyone know a new ati card that give you the same graphics as nvidia does, was already reverring to the upcomming newest ati radeon 5870 [dx11], i mean water4,5 is renderd by shaders 4, i cann't believe that the newer ati cards cannot handle shaders4, i'm also curious because i like the ati cards for their 'value for money' the nvidia cards are overpriced

FYI, setting "Water" to anything above "2" w/ an ATI GPU will default to "0". "Water=2" w/ ATI is the equivalent of "Water=4" w/ NVIDIA. Here's "Water=2" w/ an ATI 4890:

OK Brennus!, so the newer ati cards are able to get the same graphics level as nvidia, the white foam shows it, think the antialising is ok looking at the pics and how about framerate, stutters ectr...?

btw how come ati water2 is the same as nvidia water4 ?! ...not that i mind but kind of strange, is ati water2 also weatherdependent ?

Correction: These pics were captured w/ an ATI 1950XTX, I'm currently usin' an ATI 4890. Don't quote me here, but I think that "Water=2" acts just as "Water=4", complete w/ weather dependency. As for performance, here's the post regarding my recent upgrade from SimHQ:

[quote]After many years of elimination, I've concluded that IL-2 will micro-stutter if the maximum allowed FPS is @ 60 FPS.

Here's my explanation:

I just picked up an ATI Radeon

many thx Brennus, ..useful info the new directX 11 ati HD 5870 looks now even more appealing to me , btw with my nvidia card i do have micro stutters in highly detailed water-land missions but its not annoying and believe me i'm hard to please, ... thx for the 'fps tool' wil try it out
