1/48 Model Aircraft suggestions

Deac Wrote:Yes, the P-51 is overdone, because it was so great... If you're leaning towards a Tamiya P-51D, I would make a few suggestions to spice it up a bit. There are plenty of after-market modifications to make planes such as the P-51K, F-6D, etc. If you wanted, you could even make the ETF-51D out of it... If you're looking for a P-47, I would suggest the Tamiya P-47D or P-47M... If you want something earlier, there's a C conversion kit for the P-47D. If you want the last 'Jug, the P-47N, I would suggest the Academy kit.

Cheers Deac I'm already looking at after market modifications.
I think I may go for the P-47 with a couple of modifications to improve detail both inside and out.

The Buffalo in my opinion, despite being a small and nice starter craft, is a little too "basic" if that makes sense.

I've made a few 1:48 Tamiya (Me262, Mosquito, Corsair, DO335) and like their detail and fit a lot, I tried a Hasegawa (Arado jet bomber), but it seemed fiddly just for the hell of it and I was glad when I'd finished it. I've always fancied the Trumpeter Wellington Bomber in 1:48, but its where to put her when she's built?! I can recomend the Tamiya Me262 (there's a few versions some with ancilliary items, even a clear bodied version), its a plane that just looks 'right' from any angle :o

Right guys,
I have made my final decision and I'll be going with the Tamiya P-47 "Bubbletop".
I am also purchasing a few market modifications to improve the cockpit detail and engine.
So watch this space because if it is good enough I may post some pics etc.

Thanks for all your help,

For what it's worth, I agree with Anthracite Angel about the Accurate Miniatures IL-2 kits. I have built both versions and they really are a great kit!

And I think you should go with the Buffalo as well. It's something different that you don't see at each model show.

I do indeed have a bit left over so I'll buy a Buffalo for the sake of having one.
I've always loved the Buffalo (or B-239) just because of it's "window" floor Big Grin
So if I am still good at making models after all these years I'll post pics of those aswell....

Much love,
