Amount of Trees in Maps

I finally managed to figure out how to make a tree.tga, a file that determines where randomly generated tees should appear on a particular texture - usually on a 'field' texture ...

However, even though I make a multitude of white dots, which should be the placement of a tree in game, the number of trees that appear is disappointingly small, as if only 1 out of 3 or 4 white dots were being used.

So I guess there is some setting somewhere that determines the amount and density of trees that are generated in game.

Could anyone clue me in which setting that is?

Forest= in conf.ini [openGL] section

can be 1,2,3

Make the white dots bigger, at least six pixels to be sure of getting a tree.

The Tree map is a bit like the game Battleships, a tree won't appear unless your white dot hits it. You either need to make the dots bigger or move them about until you hit a tree. The smallest size for a dot is two pixels.

Thanks ... I was copying the way other such tree.tga files were made and the one I used as an example only had 1 pixel sized dots ... I'll try it with bigger dots ...

And set the forest setting at the highest setting as well ....

This is something that has eluded me for some time now but after reading this post
tonight I decided to have another go. Here is the result using one of the textures I
am using on my Vietnam map.

I too was using small pixels with no joy, I think I was also doing something wrong
elsewhere, namely in trying to backfill the texture as instructed in Kevin's tutorial.

So for the record I'll take you through the steps that I took tonight after some trial
and many errors. :roll:

The texture appears in my PS folder as VietnamAgriculture1.tga.

First step was to copy this texture somewhere and re-name as VietnamAgriculture1_fields.tga
and then paste it back to my PS folder.

Change the entry in the map.ini to read VietnamAgriculture1_fields.tga so the previously applied
texture would still show on the map.

I then opened a copy of VietnamAgriculture1_fields.tga in Gimp, added a transparent layer and
started to apply dots to this layer using the size seven pencil where the edge rows or trees appeared
on the texture. This layer was above the background original texture.

Once happy with the dots I clicked on the background layer and filled it with Black, merged/flattened
the layers, re-sized even though it was already 512 and changed to Greyscale.

This was then saved as VietnamAgriculture1_fields.tree.tga and when prompted un-checked RLE
compression, or whatever it is called.

This file was then added to my PS folder, there are now three textures in there:

VietnamAgriculture1.tga
VietnamAgriculture1_fields.tga
VietnamAgriculture1_fields.tree.tga

And there we have it, trees on my texture. Hope this helps anyone who is having difficuty with this.

is it possible to have some kind of trees "more vietnam" like palm ones....???

This would be interessant for Map like Phillippine or burma...
