Hello,
I've been having a weird issue lately. 2 actually:

1: The GPU (Nvidia 8800GTS 512) seems to be overheating. without fan, it's 70 C when nothing is running. I've downloaded RivaTuner, and now it's sort of OK:
Windows - 70% fan - 48 C
RoF/ il2 - 100% fan - 61 C / 56 C

This latter one is the problem. It happened both in XP and in Win7 32 bit, both under Rof and Il2. When the GPU temp is too high my screen freezes, and the PC restarts (usually quite confused about the video drivers.

What's wrong? Is it purely overheating? Will a simple cooling solve the issue? (I plan to remove the side, clean the inside from dust (never done that in 2 years) + put a normal fan next to it for further cooling)
I don't think it's the PSU, because I bought the PC in one piece, set up by experts, who knew what I needed it for.

The second issue is a more disconcerting one:
Since I installed win 7 I experience the following: in windows, the screen goes black, then comes back, and a pop up says: "there was an error in the display drivers, it shut down, but now it has been restored" or something like this.
I used the latest drivers, 191....
I've heard they were buggy, so I installed the 190....it was OK for a week or so, now it did it again 3 times in 5 minutes. Then I installed an older driver: 186....
What's wrong? Is it the Vcard dying? Is it the driver? Is it the monitor? Is it Riva Tuner? Please help me

Here are the possible solutions I've found:

-update drivers (didn't help, but will try with the driver cleaner thing too)
-use VGA cables with adapter instead of PCI cable (it doesn't seem logical)
-Weak PSU - I use lots of things: track IR, joystick, Rudder, throttle quadrant, I'll check waht kind of PSU I have. Might be the solution...
-update BIOS & CPU chipset - what does that mean?

The 8800 is infamous for overheating with the fan being controlled by the Nvidia driver. Nvidia drivers usually run the fan at only 33% of its maximum speed in order to keep the fan from making noise. Riva Tuner or EVGA Precision programs can be used to increase the fan speed. I run my 8000GT at 50% fan speed. Case cooling and cleanliness are also important. Odds are after 2 years you have a lot of dust inside the case and inside the cooling fan and heat sinks on your CPU and your GPU. They will need to be cleaned, but do not blow air on the fans and allow them to spin. Doing so can over speed the fan and damage its bearings and the rotation of the armature in the motor will generate electricity that can back feed to the motherboard or PSU.

Good case ventilation is also important. I have an Antec 900 case with two 120 mm fans in the front pulling air into the case, a 120mm fan in the back and a 240mm fan in the top of the case acting as exhaust fans. You want to keep cables tucked away so they don't block airflow through the case.

1: I've heard that 60-70 even 80 C is quite normal for a 8800. So it's not the overheating. My last guess would be my PSU. I'm using plenty of sticks/pedals/throttle/TrackIR, and the PSU I bought was a cheap one (will check it when I get home).
Maybe it fails under heavy load. I'll clean the whole thing nevertheless.

2: I've made some research and this is 100% a driver problem. No one seemed to have a solution. I've heard these:

-Use a VGA cable with an adapter instead ofthe DVI (bullsh*t)
- update drivers - didn't work
-use older drivers - that's my next step
- update BIOS/CMOS + cpu chipset - I don't even know what it means, and I've heard this area is a minefield...

Anyone had this message? Please help me

hi reflected, I don't know how to answer your question but I seem to be having the same problem with a nvidia 8800GT. Since this morning for some odd reason if I try to play any game such as cod4 or il2 it will make the display driver crash and subsequently give me a blue screen and restart the computer... Haven't installed anything new to it.

According to SpeedFan my GPU Temperature is 64C which is apparently too hot and Temp1 which I believe to be my graphics card is at 84C which is also apparently too hot. The minute I start up my computer the Temp1 is normally at 85C and stays there. So I don't really think there is a problem with the heat and it's been running like that for ages ever since I bought the computer and so far it's worked for over a year. Also I've heard that "apparently" Nvidia cards can go up to 127C before they are programmed to slow down the processing to get cooler...

Driver updates also haven't worked for me either :S Neither has rolling back to original drivers that came with computer.

- update BIOS find out what mother board you have and go to that web site and see if there is bios updates for that mother board....
/CMOS/ Flash the CMOS is all means take the CMOS jumper ground it then boot your machine and reset your Bios settings. youll need to know what your doing here...

+ cpu chipset - Which chip set you have intell or AMD or VIA ornvidia/ those are the chips that control yours north and south I/O systems....i.e cpu is on the north and ram gpu and pci and other cards and additions usb are on the south..

just check a wiki and type this stuff in it will school you...

Is this normal @ 100% GPU fan setting? The PSU is a Blue Storm 500, max 15 A on the 12V rail (according to the website) - 8,5A normal.
