Convoy PQ-17 attack in development
#1

Hey all, just to let you know that i'm working on a single misison for the Ju87 , featuring a attack on Convoy PQ-17 in June-July 1942. It will be a factual mission, and am working on it now. Any comments would be good Smile.

Yes, A convoy heading towards murmansk, and Archangel, where only 11 made it to their final destination, thanks for support Smile .

This is an imfamous example of a Royal Naval blunder. The convoy escorts were withdrawn to counter the threat of a large German surface unit (which never materialised) and the convoy was ordered to scatter. The lone, unarmed merchant ships were easy prey. Survival times in those waters, for those who were not killed during the initial attacks, was measured in minutes.

It was 21 merchant ships out of 34 sunk actually ... bad enough.

Notable for me as my father was sailor on SS Bellingham, one of the ships that made it through to Archangelsk in one piece, despite being hit by a dud torpedo. The ship was sunk on the way back however, September 1942 in North Sea ...

The trouble is, there really are no maps, nor easily accessible and workable satellite data for the part of the world you'd need - north of Nord Kapp, a part of Norway to the south. Kapteeni found satellite data base for images of the northern regions which is in theory workable to make maps from, but for some reason the more to the north on goes, the more skewed and stretched the imagery becomes so that it is virtually impossible to tile it all together ...

A shame, because otherwise there would have been a good map of northern Norway already made or in the make.

Perhaps this map would help, at least partly?

Laziness is the mother of progress. My QMB missions can be found here:

I was thinking of a map more north west of murmask, i could use the coral sea map, but i would prefer land nearby, like a part of Spitzbergen or somehting like that to make it more interesting.

Don't know what it says either, as Babelfish is little help here.

BUT, if you follow the links, you can download something that looks like mixx_xxxx.rar , sized around 63mb, and that is the install file for the map.

Looks very nice, though I would think there is a bit too much naked rock showing in the landscape. But even so, it is a nicely made, fresh looking map ... always a nice addition to the maps, whether you will use it for PQ17 or not ...

Looks like the Murmansk map shifted northward with more of Norway and ocean.
