Rudder pedals braking axis
#1

Hey, I've played IL-2 for quite a long time, and I am using rudder pedals (Saitek) to increase realisme and game joy.

But it is only possible to use one braking axis, and I wondered if it is possible to program a wheel brake for each wheel (left and right toe brake), like in FSX, as an example.

I also use Saitek Pedals.

You could use one pedal mapped to the Break in Hotas section (axis), as you probably already do,

and

have the other one mapped to the Break key using bands.

This way, you have both pedals breaking. Just one thing, if you map using bands, make sure you have a band higher than 85% to avoid pressing it accidentally when correcting the rudder on the ground.

This works - for any brand pedals. Found this tip a while back.

===========================================

There is a way to better simulate differential braking in this sim without mods. You will still have to apply rudder to turn .. but with this method you can have the brakes in both pedals, so basically it will be right rudder right brakes.. left rudder left brakes.. still not true DB.. but much more immersive since you will have it assigned to each pedal. .

First off set your brakes to one or the other pedals in the Controls>HOTAS>Brakes section of the sim.

Now, by default in the sim you can only use one pedal of your rudder pedals for brakes.. because in the HOTAS section there is only one line for brakes.

When you set brakes using the HOTAS screen it will take either your left or right brake pedal. Which ever one you press when you go to load the HOTAS>Brakes section and it will be either Y axis or X axis.. depending on which rudder pedal you press.

On your pedals you will still have another axis... and you can fool the sim into reading the same command for both axii, the X & the Y. Here is how...

After you set one pedal in the HOTAS section go to:

C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\Users\Doe

With Doe being whatever name you have for your default pilot.. I did this on all the pilots in my users folder (I only have 2 & the default) since I am the only one who flies the sim and I want them all to be the same..

You may see 2 config files in there depending on whether or not you started a campaign. The settings file is the one you want to edit. That is where your stick settings are found.

That is the folder with your stick settings you want to back up so that in case you accidentally load the default stick settings, or if you have a HD crash... you can get whatever settings you had back without having to reprogram everything from scratch. Just drop your backed up copy of that file where t needs to go.

First off make sure that that folder is NOT set to Read Only, it should'nt be until AFTER you are done with this.

Once in the settings folder scroll down to the section that says:

[HotKey move]
JoystickDevice0 AXE_Y=elevator
AXE_RX JoystickDevice1=-trimrudder
AXE_RZ JoystickDevice2=rudder
AXE_U JoystickDevice1=-power
AXE_U JoystickDevice0=-pitch
AXE_V JoystickDevice1=trimelevator
AXE_X JoystickDevice0=aileron
AXE_Y JoystickDevice2=brakes

If you add the line like he said you can make both of your brake pedals work. Just keep in mind this just means that you can use either pedal to operate the brakes. The games does not support nor has a mod been made (that I am aware of) that allows for you to assign one brake pedal to the left wheel brake and the other pedal to the right wheel brake. Therefore you can't not use the brakes only to steer on the ground. The rudder is the only thing that lets you turn on the ground.

Keep in mind that if you go to the controls section while your game is opened this line will be erased the next time you open the game. If you change the file attributes to read only this won't happen, but if you then make any changes while the game is open they will be gone the next time you open the game. So if you are one who really never changes anything read only attribute may be the way to go.

This sounds promissing, thank you very much.

As soon as I'm home again, I will check it out, and I think it sound to be much better than before. Of course it isn't perfectly realistic, but it's much better.

May I ask another question in here regarding the brakes?

I set up my settings.ini as described above. But the effect I got when stepping on either brake pedal is that the brakes are applied in a ... well, let's say digital way: they are on and the aircraft comes to a stop. After releasing the pedals the brakes remain applied and the aircraft will not move again. Is that the way it should work?

I have to add that I use a quite uncommon device. It's an old CH Pro Pedals for gameport that had been converted to USB to overcome the limitations of available axis for gameport devices, since I use it together with my old gameport joystick.
The conversion had not been done via an adaptor, but as a full conversion through implementing a USB joystick electronic to the pots of the pedals. So my brake axis' are +X and -Y.
