Downfall and Decision
#1

The excellent modders here have made some great mods. I was thinking that it would be nice to take some of the original planes from the game, some that AAA has already built, some that are being built, and some that need to be built and create the Invasion of Japan as a campaign for the game. I know of three main nations that would be producing their own planes and have reasearched them and found out quite a few that would have been used in the Invasion and resultant fight before the war's projected end in 1947 if the invasion were to happen. They are listed below by nationality and their status for this sim as far as I know. No experimental or service testing models were included in this list from the American or British sides, but a few were listed from the Japanese side based on what would have made it into combat. The last three Japanese planes are a little sketchy, but they were probable...

Two quick side notes... First, these are only the types that were relatively new for the Invasion or actually intended for the Invasion. Second, for markings, the Allied planes would have more than likely had the same invasion stripes used for the Invasions of France and Holland applied to help with identification. These stripes would have most likely been applied to heavy bombers too since they opperated at relatively low altitudes in the Pacific and the high altitude opperations of bombers in Europe led to their lack of stripes. The Japanese aircraft would have sported the "Defense of the Home Islands" scheme where a solid rectangles were painted around the roundels to encompass the whole wings and fuselage giving the appearance of Japanese flags.

In other words you're requesting the missing planes.

And i can see at least 1 plane that only was tested.

Pretty much those and whatever else anyone can think of that would be historically accurate whenever someone gets time. The American list is most full but the others are probably missing planes.

Will edit list. Thanks for the update. I didn't know about the F7F and thought the Vampire was just the F. 5 and the P-61 was just the B model. I didn't even know that the Lanc was going to participate in Downfall! I guess I was wrong. Very good thing here!

We are doing the Mk.1/Mk.II/Mk.III/Mk.V/Mk.IX/ & evenF.22 twin seater Vampires. We also have the Vene build version w/Elephant ears planned. I have not updated the Vampire thread with these details.

The F.E Lanc was specificaly intended for use in Tiger Force.

F7F is a WIP by Highlander.

That is amazing. I particurally like the news on the Vampire as it is one of my favorite planes. The Brits should have used it as an interceptor instead of the Meteor. Would have made quite the difference in Korea if they had Vampires instead. They could have actually kept with the Mig 15 turn for turn according to what I've read. But I'm no expert, I just pretend to be one... Big Grin

Tempest II is missing off the list . Beamont was going to lead these as part of Tiger Force, also the Avro lincoln B.I , and a handful of B.II's were also marked for Tiger Force.

Don't forget that beautiful Seafury that Flakiten made.

Sea Fury may have been a bit late as it didn't enter service trials until Feb 1947 with 778 NAS and became operational with 803 Sqn , Royal Canadian Navy, later that year.

Do you mean a history-based hypothetical campaign, simply carrying forward the plans that were in place as if the bomb was not dropped, or a fantasy campaign that assumes some significant departure from history in, say, 1942? If the former, you can probably cut that list in half.

Nope, the actual planned invasion for if the atomic bombs weren't dropped. Trust me, it'd be hell, but it'd be interesting...
