MK VIII gun sight mod problem
#1

Mod for the Mk VIII gun sight included as part HSFX 4.1 install has problems. I can only see the long range ring (inner) from my normal head position. If you use TrackIr 6DOF you have to move your face almost to the monitor to see the entire image of the sight.

It appears that either the mesh for the reflector glass was made too small in the mod or the gun sight reticule was made too large to fit on the reflector glass or a combination of both. Maybe the wrong head position/distance from the site was used.

These aircraft have the problem.

F4F-4
FM-2
F4U-1A/Corsair II
F4U-1C
F4U-1D/Corsair IV
F6F-3
F6F-5
SBD-5

Only the F4F-3 allows you to see the entire reticule (both rings out to 100 MILS).

Any chance of the mod maker fixing this?

I read that SEOW are not using 6DOF, but may consider it in the future. Maybe the problem is that whoever made this mod did not factor in the head movement and centering when using the 6DOF.

The gunsight reticles are correct and are the correct size. A tip would be, when you start Trakir, be farther away from the monitor than you will be when flying. Then, after starting the game, move to your normal position, closer to the screen. You'll get more, if not all of the image. I've looked through a real Mk VIII sight and it has a very big image. You have to get your head fairly close to the sight to see it all.

Cheers.

In the Corsairs, at least, the sight is obscured at all normal viewing distances and angles unless you put your nose to the monitor with TIR 6DOF. With normal Il-2 views, you will never see the entire picture of the gunsight, as it is obscured by an invisible hole (mask) in front of the armored glass. Entire sight should be visible from all distances in the Corsair, as it has the large glass plate to reflect on.

The problem with your recommendation (you can do this by leaning way back and hitting the center view hot key for TrackIr) is that with 6DOF as you move forward the view changes to zoom and your FOV becomes smaller which is a limitation of the TrackIr. On the F4U-1A and later variants the sight was projected onto a flat panel not a small reflector glass and since it was set to infinity the size should not change with head movement. With the limitations of computer views this should have been left as an optional mod not an embedded mod that you can't disable in JSGME.

Not true. The plate was a bullet proof glass and not just for displaying the sight image. My friend that has a Mk VIII says that when you shine the image on a large sheet of glass you can still only see it in a small area similar in size to the round reflector glass on earlier installations.

I use Sans FOV changer and it works really well in combo with the Trakir - I can see the whole sight image and still have a nice wide FOV. I dunno. Works for me.

Just trying to help. I didn't invent the thing it comes from this mod viewtopic.php?t=15460

I really like the mod. Notice in the first paragraph of the mod NWD says "I've calibrated every reticle to its proper size by editing the meshes (most were correctly sized, but some were way off)."

One of the sights that was "way off" was the Mk VIII.

Sorry I did not use "armored" before glass plate in the sentence immediately after the first time I used it, but I think it should be obvious that is what I meant. What your friend says makes no sense. The edges of the sight being obscured is a product of the 3D engine. You can see the edges of the "hole" as you move your head around with TrackIR. The gunsight picture is the right size, it just doesn't work with the way the Corsair cockpit was set up in Il-2. Same is true for stock gunsights, you just don't see edges of the "hole" because your head is rigid the and the spaces in between stadia and rings in the gunsight image are completely transparent. That said, I'd love to see some pictures illustrating that interesting claim.

Yeah, it didn't make any sense to him or me either. I'm just reporting what he told me. He's no jerk he's an aerospace engineer and a pilot and a WWII history buff and I believe what he told me. We were talking about it on the phone a few weeks ago after he'd discovered the phenomenon. He was thinking of installing his Mk VIII in a small sports plane like an RV-4 and thought the big glass might give a wider field of view for the sight, but no dice. Very strange.

1. You know HSFX 4.1 was designed for use in SEOW.
2. As you say, 6DOF is not used in SEOW, therefore it is an optional mod.
3. The gunsight mod works perfectly in SEOW.
4. Why should something that works and be required by every player in SEOW be made optional?
5. If 6DOF is used in SEOW in future, then the gunsight views will have to be corrected.
6. HSFX 4.2 is unlikely to see the light of day for at least six months, maybe longer, and will still be tailored to SEOW.
7. The end.

Not a complaint against the SEOW, they are entitled to include or exclude whatever mods that suit their purposes.

My complaint is that those not part of SEOW, but who are proponents of the format in which HSFX 4.1 is compiled and made the decision that this should be the format for all future releases needs to take a long hard look at the one size fits all approach.

3. The gunsight mod works perfectly in SEOW.

This should be a flag for future releases. What is good for SEOW may not be good for the rest of the modding community.

Having said all this. Does anyone have/know of a fix to be able to see the entire gun sight of just these planes again while using TrackIr 6DOF, which got changed with an embedded mod in HSFX 4.1?
