MODS System Choice

Back to standard 4.09m as UP2.0 has porked the bombers, not using stuff that gimps up the game like that.

So I guess this confirms what I thought.
That the majority are using UP2.0 at present.

I guess the additional planes is the main attraction.

How long before the truly Unified Version is brought out?
Don't think I change again until that happens.

2 weeks Wink No, seriously I don't think many people know (if any). I thought HSFX would be the main step towards unification, but clearly some mod parties want to keep their preferences on top of any mod packs. What it boils down to is that there will always be one mod party who wants to have some mods their way, whilst another disagrees. So in this sense unification can seem impossible. But it's not; differences just have to be worked out. Wink

Held off from mods initially - suspicions about dubious files, Mickey Mouse FMs, playing people online with uber Mickey Mouse FMs etc, but eventually gave them a try. Started with UI1.1 - seemed great at first, but long load times, poor fps soon resulted in me sticking to 4.08/9. HSFX 4.0/1 came along and I gave it a try - very pleased, mods AND no real performance hit, so my default offline version was HSFX for a while. Didn't like being forced to use mods that were for SEOW only (eg, the 'S' button thought-police), but not a major handicap. Very reluctant to go UP2 at first; a lot of what I heard made me suspicious and their answers only seemed to confirm the suspicions.

Then I actually looked at the different FMs - did some work of my own with Infomod, looked up old IL2C data, and the new stuff done for UP2. Frankly I was very surprised at the total lack of quality control in all the previous mod packs. I'd assumed FMs released in mod packs went through some sort of screening and testing. Thats one reason I started with UI1.1 and not individual mods at an earlier stage. When some mod FMs are very different from almost identical stock planes the game is not being enhanced, it's being made a joke. Anyway, having looked at the changes UP made I could see they were at least doing something to make these mod FMs 'fit' into Oleg's world. The bonus with having moved to UP2.0 was being able to ditch those SEOW mods or at least be able to chose when to use them.

The gameplay mods, like MDS, wind, realistic bomb/torp, carrier mod etc are all excellent and make mods worthwhile on their own. They're the main reason to have mods, IMO. There are new flyables which are great to have too and which have been very well done, but quite a few merely look the right size and shape while flying like something else. They may be 'flyable,' but until they're fixed they aren't useable, and for that reason I'll probably be sticking with UP2.

If you compare UP FM's to ours, ours are a lot closer to Oleg's standards than theirs Wink

Is that HSFX (ours) vs UP (theirs) ?

For me it'll just be the platform with the best stability and modding possibilities that wins the match.
I got to tweak stuff to my own likings.

I put off going megapack for as long as I could stand it; tried HSFX, but things were missing for me. It also seemed pretty difficult to update my mods and have things not conflict somehow. Then I installed UP right over HSFX and I have just about all I wanted. Just added some custom maps and beta planes and good to go.

There was an update for UP 2,0 but I haven't been to add that yet. Since 2.0 I have been just trying to get a handle on all the stuff that's in there 8)

Will likely be busy for a while Big Grin

I think your assumption is incorrect. You can easily get extra planes from AAA or SAS. Main attractions are fixing many, many (mostly Java) errors, packing it all in SFS files, JGSME, providing the option right from the game for stock 4.09m, HSFX 4.1 or UP2.0, fast load times plus many other improvements. Its not perfect, but you can throw mods on it (I typically use the SAS buttons file) same as any other mod pack. What's not to like? I used AAA the longest, the HSFX, now UP.. no brainer as far as I'm concerned.

Hmm, if HSFX is using AAA FM's than yes. Actually, by saying 'ours' I am being a bit generalistic as we have only used, I think, the FM's the original modders made so we leave that untouched. I think HSFX uses these FM's Wink

I play off-line and have two sepaarte folders 1)il2AAA upgrade 409+SAS buttons 2)il2 u.p. 2.0 The history is AAA, i play with her, but the il2 folder is 23gig! and i have probably a lot of conflicts... The future is sfx (Hsfx or U.P. is not important, both works well) and a compatible base+ dedicates mods for off-line and online (ex. SAS buttons for off-line and online). Long life AAA. Now i wait for Canvas knights!!!(third folder...) Sorry for english Big Grin

I use UP2.0m with my own custom switches. So I can activate the following:
- UP2.0m vanilla
- HSFX 4.1
- Custom II./JG53 modpack running latest SAS offline buttons (my main setup)
- Copy of above which I use to test my mods out with
- Stock 4.09m

Best way to go, I have 100% compatibility with EVERYTHING. Takes some time to setup but well worth it. I get no issues with any server and everything works AND fast. I've removed my UI install, runs much slower and more inefficiently as well as taking up more HD space for little reward. HSFX/UP based installs are the way to go!

I use the 2.0 as well as the entire USLG community. Our major reason for choosing it as our competition platform was not planes, it was stability and ease of use. We have 30+ teams and 1200+ pilots so the one click installer, the JSGME addon selector, combined with 2.0's overall stability made it our choice. 1.8 was a rough start but 2.0 has proven itself to be rock solid.
