F_maps

Being that i can't use perfect settings i rely on F_maps a lot of the time.

I've discovered a cool effect using the F_maps on some modded maps and now i'm trying to see if i can generate a similar effect with the stock F_maps.
I'm able to convert the tga so i can edit them but they don't always match the correct map size. They might be stretched too big or small, or just not the right dimensions.

What i need, if anyone is privy to this info, is the F_map sizes (pixels x pixels) for:

Balaton
Berlin
Crimea: 1472x832
Finsgulf: 2176x1072
Kuban
Kursk
Lviv
Moscow
Net1S
Net1W
Net2S
Net2W
Net3S
Net5S
prokhorovaka: 544x480
Smolensk
Stgrad



I'll start with those. I figure someone has to know the dimensions.

Here are a few dimensions:

finsgulf: 2176x1072
prokhorovaka: 544x480


Btw : the F map has the same size as the H and T maps so if you have any of those available, the dimensions are the same.

here's an example of an F map i made for Cartagena

I'm trying to incorporate a hazy effect but its probably better suited for damper climates or winter maps.

Its a tedious process to get the F map like this, and even this one is not perfect. i will probably have to redo it because there are parts that don't match up with the foreground textures, but at least you can get an idea.

I guess you meant the dimensions of map_F filles !

I have not tried the other maps yet, but since i already had Crimea done i thought i would test it.
After I converted the Crimea map i had the same dimensions, but for some reason it doesn't fit properly. Instead i see grassland over the ocean where the F_map fills in the detail.

I used the IMF converter for the TGA file so i could edit it. All i did was change some shading so the plot and the relief should still match but at 2048 x 1024 it doesn't appear correctly.

Thats part of the reason i was asking for the proper dimensions.

Well, i also used IMF converter and i use Adobe photoshop to edit texture files and this dimension is what the photoshop shows for Crimea: :?
Remember that these files contains alpha channel too, and if you use gimp to edit you must adjust compressing options, the map_F tga file for Crimea is 8MB in size.

Maybe something went wrong with the converting.

Since all maps H / T /ed_M02 / and F are the same size, you can just as well check out the dimensions for the h OR t OR ED_m02 MAPS.

Here is what I found for the map_T of the Crimea map:

I still have 1472 x 832 pixels in size

Maybe! Well, I have same dimensions also 1472x832 for map_h, map_T and ed_m02 for Crimea. (I did a new extraction for
all files in Crimea and converted all files and still get the same dimensions for map_F, 2048x1024). I did a test Crimea mod, first with
2048x1024 map_F file and put it in mods folder and it worked well in FMB, then i resized it to 1472x832 and strange enough it worked too.

I don't have the H and T maps for all these maps either, and even if i did, i wouldn't be able to check the dimensions.

Is there a way i can check the pixel sizes with out having to convert or open the file. I've checked properties but there is nothing indicating size there.

If conversion distorts the sizes then i'll have the wrong dimensions again.

If it's any consolation, I could not open the F map either, no matter which viewer or graphics program that I used. The compression type or whatever it is, doesn't seem to be supported by any program I have. However, by extracting the other components of the Crimea map, the T / H and ed_m02 maps, I saw that these maps were NOT compressed. They opened easily in all viewers and graphic editors.

And since all these maps, and the F map have the exact same dimensions, if all you need is the dimension, then any will suffice.

And you can always take the T map, make a copy, convert to rgb 16million colors, and select each gray rgb value and convert to a color that is appropriate for the F map (an approximation of the ground texture color). Then you follow kevin's tutorial on how to make an F map (too complicated to explain here) and voila, you'll have an F map, uncompressed and in the correct dimensions.

All this takes about an hour or less to do once you've gone through the tutorial. Say it take double or triple as long the first time, you'll still come out ahead instead of trying again and again a procedure that apparently doesn't work.

Just make a new F map ... and then you can continue with your own procedure ...
