I've just done a lot of research on this one (see 'More Water Problems' topic on M4T tech help).
Even tho nvidia water=4 is supposedly the same as ATI water=2, reflections, waves and whitecaps look better with ATI, IMHO.
Plus I don't get a huge drop in frame rate with ATI w=2, whereas I do with nvidia w=4.

hey guys, and a happy st. pattys day to all! quick question, for whatever reason i cant save the changes to my conf.ini file. I make the changes, click save, all seems hunky dory but lo and behold i still cant change to "perfect" mode. as of now i have il-2 4.09 HSFX 4.1 that works fine. HELP, im gettin tired of flat textureless water. appreaciate all your hard work, keep it up

use openGL and attempt stencil buffer.
Yea thats what i thought at first, but it was already set to OpenGl and stencil buffer. i (unfortunatly) have vista. could that be part of it?

I have Vista with no problems. What is your graphics card?

And edit the registry. It runs without anything in the registry but to have as few problems as possible you should edit it. If you're not familiar with registry editor leave the registry as it is.
