The Fantasy
In the late 1930s, the US Navy issued BuAer SD112-14 soliciting a twin-engined fighter form the major aircraft manufactures. Lockheed, who was already deep into developing the XP-38 decided to enter the competition with a radial-engined folding wing version of the Lighting. Dubbed the XFV-1 Trident, it actually had a higher performance rating than it's USAAF counterpart due to it's lower weight. It was soon discovered that this aircraft could also carry a Mk. 13 torpedo under its port wing. The idea was that after launching the torpedo, the aircraft could easily fight its way back to its carrier or defend other aircraft in the area.

More of interest to be built would be the Navalised P-51, which actually WAS converted and trailed.

You are correct Magpie, but the Navy test pilot involved determined that it would have been unsuited for shipboard operations for three reasons; it was too difficult to land for the average Naval pilot; the landing gear was too delicate; and the Packard Merlin liquid cooled engine would not stand up to the requirements of shipboard operations. Personally, I think a better choice for them to have investigated would have been a P-47 with Fouler flaps, allowing for a slower approach speed. But that's just my opinion. :wink:

What would a P-47 have offered over the Hellcat or Corsair, other than being a whole hell of a lot more difficult to get off the deck of the carrier? The Navy was not looking for a Hellcat or Corsair replacement. The navalized P-51 was considered for a very specific mission in very specific circumstances, and pretty much only for its outstanding range capability.

Not a thing, and I realize that the Navy wasn't trying to replace the Hellcat or Corsair. Nor was I advocating that. I just think that if they were going to put an USAAF plane aboard ship, the Jug would have been a better choice. I don't understand your comment about it being hard to get off the deck. They flew off jeep carriers to strike Okinawa I believe. The catapult would get it off easily. The range would have been a problem though. It's just intriguing to think about flying a Jug around the boat! :wink:
