Lemme start by saying I love this site, it has singlehandedly renewed my love for IL2.....

But HSFX won't start...

I did a clean install from the DVD ROM (4.08m) and updated it to 4.09. At that point, it crashes at 3%.

I thought 'Heck with it' and I did the HSFX 4 install, and then the 4.1. Obviously, it didn't help. The splash page looked nifty though (for the 3 seconds I saw it...)

I'm at a loss... any help would be awesome

Are you certain that your DVD is 4.08m? I know that some are, but most, I think are 4.07m, and need to be patched to 4.08m.

5% crash is classis "missing patch" crash.

I did a quick check after I reinstalled it and it said 4.08m. I bought the new DVD last fall, since my first one was, well... lost

You need to be more specific when your asking for guidance. You can't refer to "it" when trying to refer to IL-2. Did you reinstall your version of IL-2 1946 and the game version reflected version 4.08m ???

When you mention that HSFX won't work.......are you aware that there are "two parts" to properly download and have the executable run properly ??? When installing HSFX 4.0 and then HSFX 4.1, did you select "Client" in the options to properly download these two parts ???

Your problem is not MOD related. It is a problem with the official install.

Reinstall the DVD and run the game. The version number is on screen (btm left) when it starts.
You will have either 4.07m or 4.08m. Which is it?

If your DVD is sold as v4.08m then there may be a 4.08m patch on the DVD?

If necessary you will need to download the 4.08m patch.

When you have the game working in 4.08m, and only then, install 4.09mfinal
Note this is the final batch not the beta 4.09b1m version.

Run the game, startup should say 4.09m and have the Team Diadalos logo.

If you have it working in 4.09m version ok you can then install HSFX

There is also a link in the thread to a fix for pre-patched v4.08m direct download versions of the game -- in case thats what you have.

I hear ya, I'll be more specific.

I uninstalled and reinstalled from the IL2 1946 DVD ROM . Once installed I launched the game to see which version it was, and it said 4.08m.

I went on to install from the '4.09 Game Patch EN' folder I downloaded off Torrent, and ran it to see if the version checked out. It said 4.09m, but it crashed after 3% loaded.

I did see the Team Diadolos logo when 4.09m booted up.

I guess I should have asked for help and before going on to the 4 and 4.1 installs.

There have been some issues with the 4.09m patch for some people, related to some .dll files:

il2_core.dll
il2_corep4.dll
mg_snd.dll
mg_snd_sse.dll

but usually it manifests as a 95% or 100% crash.

Saving those files from your 4.08m install, and replacing them after applying the 4.09m patch may fix it for you.
Worth a try.

Another possibility is that your 4.09m patch download is corrupt.
