II Gruppo Caccia was formed at Milan's Bresso airfield in February-March 1944. It was made up of many Bf.109G veterans from Regia Aeronautica's 3 and 150 Gruppo Autonomi Caccia. The new fighter unit began operational training after taking delivery of 40 Fiat G.55s at Bresso in early March.

Fiat G.55 Serie I
Unit: 2 Squadriglia, II Gruppo Caccia 'Diavoli Rossi', ANR
Serial: 5

This 'germanized' Centauro has type 'C' fasces applied on the wings. Considered too visible, initial type 'A' fasces -with white background- were abolished in March of 1944. The use of white fuselage bands also began to be discontinued at about the same time. (Camouflage: RLM74/RLM75 upper surfaces -mottled on the fuselage sides- with RLM76 undersurfaces).

In 1944, the 2nd Squadriglia, 2 Cacia Group was meeting in Cascina Vaga. In January 1945 the ANR was reorganized in the patterns of the Luftwaffe and the 2nd Squadriglia of Gruppo II became the 5th Squadriglia.
