Each kind of fighter have pros/cons that the others do not have and some have better guns. In the hands of a pilot any plane can bring down its opposition. But I would hate to be on the receiving end of the 20/30 mm cannons the 109 could carry.
I don't believe it's the pilot or the plane. I believe it's the right combination of pilot and plane. Some say your aircraft is an extension of yourself; that is to say, if it doesn't "fit" you, then you probably won't do too well in it.
I wouldn't say I'm an ace or anything, but when I first stepped into our virtual Bf.109, I was instantly smitten with its handling. I was getting shot down by spits left and right until I discovered energy tactics, but the plane still suited me. I then tried using the Spitfire; first impression was poor visibility due to the canopy frame and terrible roll rate. Energy tactics didn't work so well. Turning battles didn't work on an enemy who knew better. The guns lacked punch. A year later and I can dominate offline with any 109, but am hard pressed to get a single kill using the Spitfire, as in my opinion it's a miserable gun platform in-game.
