Thanks mate for the quich reply!

I haven't thought at the GPU settings for vsinc at the first time!

I have setted the conf.ini like reported in your post at page 3!

cheers

Walter,

Turn Vertical Sync OFF for basics Benchmarking

Turn Vertical Sync ON before Optimization

There is an exception to this: If you need more Frames Per Second, then have Vertical Sync OFF, until you are satisfied.

Hi, Thanx for your hard work and info sharing...I read nearly the whole documnt (s)...more skimming ... then intelegent reasoning...anyway my system runs very well. I have Nvida 6800-6900 on an older HP single core system (2003) ish. Now I was insterested in your massive post because of the up comming SOW relese and want to be prepared with the right system. I began a half-ass benchmarking process but only to investigate the system and how it works ...call it a probe if you will. I DL'd NHancer and installed it. I am a novice with graphic settings.....So I need some questions answered....:~)
I also have Track IR5
Fraps is showing 60fps down to 20fps the "black death" drops to 10 fps during explosions.
Running OPEN GL with perfect settings.
The trouble I am having is a lot of stuttering that appeares to be sound related, so I turn off the sound....problem still there...The stuttering seems to occur when the pilots text appears on the screen...."check you six" and whatnot, this really kills your aim.

Also there is more aliasing than I like, which is why I want to try to use the Nhancer.

With Nhancer an Antialiasing on nothing seems to happen....no improvment. Am I using it right?

A quick tutorial would help, the manual ins'nt much help. Do I start it and minimize it like track IR, or is it supposed to "boot" my game.

Now when I turn off Nhancer to go back and compare, the IL2fb.exe quits, I can't boot the game. So I went to the setup.exe re-ran it...that worked once....
It wont start no matter what I do now.

I have not been able to resolved this yet..I worked 3 12 hr shifts this week so that leaves around an hour or so to play.

Also I had the dreded (Hook) error, I fixed that last week sometime, but now it is back... and its intermitent. I don't know if its related or not. But any insight would be helpful.

I can send Conf.ini and what ever else you may need (if at all) when I get home after midnight or tomorrow. Iam at work at the moment but I will try to check back.

Thanx

Making IL-2 run well is possible with your system, though OpenGL perfect settings are out your reach as far as smooth operating in the simulation. I do not think that OpenGL perfect settings are possible in your computer while expecting smooth operation. Give to me your computer model, CPU type details, and GPU type details, along with how many cores you have. After you provide these, I will make a final recommendation about whether to use OpenGL or DirectX.

Make sure that you have a clean, unused, virgin copy of IL-2 and anything else that must have a copy for safekeeping.

Important ideas which I have for you:

1) The exact nHancer version which matches your graphics card driver must be installed. If you give me your exact computer model with the exact graphics driver number, then I can help you to choose an nHancer version that matches your system. This information to make a decision is found at the nHancer website/Downloads/Read Me.

2) If you have the single core laptop, then you must not use multi-core and dynamic tiling.

If you have dual core, then you should activate multi-core, multi-thread, Pre-rendered Frames, and Dynamic Tiling.

The humble confession by you that you are a novice can be a good thing, because you will not have bias, or pre-conceived notions about graphics issues. My tech help topic is now basically complete and you came to a great one to learn.

1) TrackIR and Fraps will decrease the performance of IL-2 at least some. In most very powerful computer systems, this is not noticeable, but it should be obvious in your computer. Try running The Black Death, both with and without TrackIR, and you should see a difference. Fraps will eventually be closed for normal flying in IL-2, but you could temporarily close it as an experiment to see the effect on the IL-2 performance.

2) You should be able to achieve a small improvement during The Black Death track, eventually. You should have the Vertical Sync OFF during the Benchmarking, which is what you should do next. After that is the Optimization stage, which is what you will do last and have Vertical Sync ON at that time.

During the Benchmarking, you will use the IL-2 Setup and decide whether to use the foundations, such as OpenGL or DirectX and other il2set.exe settings, multi-core, mult-thread, prerendered frames, and dynamic tiling. During the Benchmarking stage that you have now, you are discovering the basic size and impact of IL-2 in your computer, hence the term Benchmarking.

Later, I will help you with Optimiztion, but let us focus on Benchmarking for now.

3) The pilot chat text can be disabled if you prefer that. Do you want it to be displayed, or not displayed?

4) Anti-Aliasing will effect stuttering. For the Benchmarking Phase, where you are now, you need to set this low. You might set this to " Application Controlled " during the Benchmarking Phase at this time. Later, in the Optimization Phase, you will increase this to your preference.

Believe it or not, this tech help topic is a quick, condensed tutorial. There is much information which I could have included, but for the sake of avoiding confusion and not frustrating people with many pages, I created it as short as I believe that it should be.

1) All programs, which are related to IL-2, should be open but minimalized to the taskbar. Never close the nHancer: Let it stay operating during IL-2. You should check to make sure that all your nHancer settings are correct and activated before each time that you start IL-2. I recommend manually starting the nHancer Profile which you want to use everytime before you start IL-2. Let the nHancer be ON all the time.

2) The confi.ini file is for Optimization stage and we should wait until that time.

The post by you shows an interested, so I replied appropriately with a thorough response. This took time but I am glad to help. Feel free to continue the conversation. Big Grin

OpenGL = the possibility of the best image quality, including Perfect Water.
DirectX = achieving excellent, but not perfect image quality and NO perfect water.

1) il2set.exe Clicking on this file icon will bring a command box for IL-2 basic graphics settings. This is within the Benchmarking Phase of handling IL-2 graphics issues.

That being said, you need to set IL-2 to run in only OpenGL, Use Stencil Buffer ( check the box in the middle of the window ), Texture mipmap filter: Anisotropic, and Texture Compression: NONE:

[Image: AccessingTheSetupBox_il2set_exe.jpg]

[Image: IL-2SetupHighestImageQualitySetting.jpg]

2) confi.ini This is also found in the main registry of the IL-2 Stumovik 1946 folder.

Perfect water in the confi.ini requires the values set in the following command lines under the [Render_OpenGL] section:

[Image: PerfectWater_OpenGL_confiniFileForI.jpg]

Notice especially the following conf.ini command lines for Perfect Water:

[window]
ColourBits=32

[Render_OpenGL]

TexQual=3
TexMipFilter=3
TexCompress=0

HardwareShaders=1

water=2 (For ATI graphics cards only)
water=4 (For NVIDIA graphics cards only)

Hardware Setup in IL-2 For Perfect Water

Here is the click path for the IL-2 setup of Perfect Water:

Main Menu/ Hardware Setup/ Video Options/ Picture Quality/ Custom/ Landscape Detail/ Perfect

Restart IL-2 to be sure that all settings are applied and ready for your use.

Let me know if you get it. Smile

Computer is:

HP Pavillion a320n

AMD Athalon (Single Core) XP 2800+ 2.08 Ghrz
2 gig RAM
Windows XP 32 bit Service pak 3

Video card is the NVida GEForce 7600 GS (I was wrong about this in the earlier post)
Driver Version 197.13 (latest)
Core Clock: 400mhz
Memory Clock: 400Mhz (800 Mhz Data)
Memory INTERFACE 128-BIT
Memory: 512MB
Video BIOS Ver. 5.73.22.51.00
IRQ16
BUS: AGP 8X

22" LCD Screen (soon to be 28") 1680x1050 running at 1440x900 cuz I like it there.

I know its an older one but the wife (then girlfriend) bought it without my input for school....but not a bad choice :~) I installed the video card last summer, its the best this mother board can handle.

OK also......Now this may be related to "Stability" but I have had to learn to live with these little inconveniences.

These are old problems that I think are Windows related. They may have started when I began Modding, but IL2 has always had a quirk for me in one form or another. So the relationship between MODS and OS may not be clearly defined. All of these occur even after fresh installs, noting makes them Go Away...

Problems....

1. When clicking the Icon to boot game and the splash screen pops up, the Windows task bar does not go away until I click the mouse once or twice during the boot. It will stay put like it refuses to go away.

2. Occasionally the game will boot two instances, I tried to defeat this by right clicking the icon and the left clicking the OPEN selection, this is sketchy. It has only happened once or twice in the last month or so. When it does I usually have to re-boot the computer.

3. When/if #2 does not occur after the the first splash screen the game menu appears but there is NO mouse control, is there a command I can use? I worked around this by hitting Ctrl+alt+del for the Task manager waiting a second or two, make sure there are NOT two instances of the game and then close T.M.
I will then have mouse control.

But recently the game does not come back after closing T.M. it crashes. I will restart it go through all of the above, but I will have mouse control in the game menu this time around...annoying as hell....

4. Sound: This one is real irritating. After a system re-boot, if I do not go into control panel and bring up Sound and Audio Devices>Audio>Advanced>Performance> and bring the slider down one notch for "Hardware Acceleration" Click Apply then OK I will get this terrible re verb effect in game.

I don't know what else to do with these, I hope they are simple settings that I am unaware of.

Feedback anyone please?

Thanx

Good day,

1) The NVIDIA 179.13 driver of yours is correct, according to the NVIDIA website. You can use the latest version of nHancer. Save it, scan the download for malware, and test it for corruption.

2) I recommend that you give several more attempts to use OpenGL for Benchmarking and the following Optimization. DirectX will be the last resort if you can not get OpenGL to render smooth 3D motion in IL-2.

3) Study my Benchmarking Phase 1 and apply the OpenGL section settings.

4) Study my Optimization Phase 2 and use all the OpenGL settings.

After doing these tasks, let me know the results with your FPS and how smooth IL-2 runs while you play The Black Death track. We will take it from there. You should have at least a good image quality and mostly smooth play by the time we are done.

I am done for the night, but we will go further tomarrow.

Good day,

The Operating System usually has nothing to do with FPS and stutters. One of a few exceptions is when a person allows too much RAM consuming memory to be taken, such as browsing history which can include stored images of websites for faster viewing. Deleting all the RAM using stuff as I instruct in my tech help topic is among the first tasks in preparation for Benchmarking.

Mods have little or nothing to do with the OS, however, many mods are demanding on a computer such as the Fw-190 mods of UltraPack 2.0, though mods are fun and hard to not collect in a mission.

db605-A/S Wrote:Problems....

1. When clicking the Icon to boot game and the splash screen pops up, the Windows task bar does not go away until I click the mouse once or twice during the boot. It will stay put like it refuses to go away.

This is about IL-2 that was created before the current Operating System updates. It is a .dll conflict somewhere.

You can try pressing the Windows key and then click on the icon or IL-2 in order to make it disappear. I experience the nuisance, too, and there seems to be no system fix available-at least not an easy one.

db605-A/S Wrote:2. Occasionally the game will boot two instances, I tried to defeat this by right clicking the icon and the left clicking the OPEN selection, this is sketchy. It has only happened once or twice in the last month or so. When it does I usually have to re-boot the computer.

This is caused by click bounce. Basically you think that you clicked only once, but in fact there was a momentary bounce in the click action that causes the icon to be opened twice. Many people go through this and it is a typical quirk like the last issue. This is just an annoyance that we must bear. Of course, you can use Task Manager to close one instance of IL-2.

db605-A/S Wrote:3. When/if #2 does not occur after the the first splash screen the game menu appears but there is NO mouse control, is there a command I can use? Yes, this is another common quirk that many have to handle. The best way to deal with this is to push the Windows key, which has the symbol of a window on it, and after the IL-2 reduces to the task bar, then click the task bar IL-2 icon to restore the full screen view of IL-2. Sometimes this must be repeated to the second or third attempt.

db605-A/S Wrote:4.

Here is how you can adjust the sound. Go into the IL-2 Main Menu.

Follow this click path:

Main Menu/ Hardware Setup/ Sound Setup/ Audio Button - Change the 44,100 hz frequency to the more realistic, bassy, beefier, 22,050 hz frequency. Also, experiment with the different Speakers Types there. I usually use headphones, so I have mine set to Headphones to give deeper sound, for example.

The sound card of most computers can be adjusted, often with the use of an equalizer. If you do not have one, there are Freeware and Open Source equalizers which you can download and adjust the sound to the way you like it. This could over ride your system settings and give you what you want.

Good day,

What you report to me above this is satisfactory. I assume that you are having these new results with OpenGL and the Perfect Water according to the instructions which I gave you a few posts before this. If you give me all your il2set.exe and graphics control panel settings, then I might be able to help you do better.

Hi!

Sorry for the delay!

I have setted my conf.ini to best settings for both provire so when I fly a map with a lot of water I use OpenGL to got better graphic and when I fly over ground I'll swithc to DirectX to better land detail!

I'm testing a visibility distance 4 and seem this allow object appear more smoothly!

I hope to have set all right!

The configuration for OpenGL Best Image Quality is following - see every command line and compare to yours:
[Render_OpenGL]
TexQual=3
TexMipFilter=3
TexCompress=0
TexFlags.UseDither=1
TexFlags.UseAlpha=1
TexFlags.UseIndex=0
TexFlags.PolygonStipple=1
TexFlags.UseClampedSprites=0
TexFlags.DrawLandByTriangles=1
TexFlags.UseVertexArrays=0 ( ATI graphics card must have UseVertexArrays=0, because of blue anomalies. ATI user should test with and without Vertex Arrays to see if your card and graphics driver is an exception. )
TexFlags.DisableAPIExtensions=0
TexFlags.ARBMultitextureExt=1
TexFlags.TexEnvCombineExt=1
TexFlags.SecondaryColorExt=1
TexFlags.VertexArrayExt=1
TexFlags.ClipHintExt=1
TexFlags.UsePaletteExt=0
TexFlags.TexAnisotropicExt=1
TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=0

TexFlags.TexEnvCombine4NV=1
TexFlags.TexEnvCombineDot3=1
TexFlags.DepthClampNV=1
TexFlags.SeparateSpecular=1
TexFlags.TextureShaderNV=1

HardwareShaders=1

Shadows=1
Specular=2
SpecularLight=2
DiffuseLight=2
DynamicalLights=2
MeshDetail=2
VisibilityDistance=3

Sky=2
Forest=3
LandShading=2
LandDetails=3

LandGeom=2 ( =3 for OpenGL and powerful graphics card )
TexLarge=1 ( =2 OpenGL and powerful graphics card )
TexLandQual=3
TexLandLarge=1 ( =2 OpenGL and powerful graphics card )

VideoSetupId=17
-VideoSetupId=17
Water=4 (ATI is Water=2, NVIDIA is Water=4)
Effects=2 (=3 for best effects. Lower this number to increase performance)
ForceShaders1x=1
PolygonOffsetFactor=-0.15
PolygonOffsetUnits=-3.0

For Best Image Quality, you would not use any command that says Compression or filter. For example, this is true in the il2set.exe where you see Texture Compression ARB Extension which allows compression to produce better performance with a slight hit against image quality.

In the il2set.exe ( Click the icon in the Registry to bring the command box to Desktop ) and also in the conf.ini above this, you make certain that Palette is not used. Make sure that the command line reads:
TexFlags.UsePaletteExt=0 The zero indicates that no palette is used and the computer graphics can render any of millions of colors. This is the best possible color with a small decrease of performance.
