The map of europe 1:1

mandrill7 Wrote:Okay, Bearkiller. You're doing the Ruhr-Rhine area as your first project. You are going to have so many urban areas, your FPS rate is going to be about 2.5 over most of your map!!!

Calm down, Brother! You surely need some Lao Red or Moroccon Egg! ;dd Tongue

As I said before, no need in recreating every damn side street in Cologne, take the Sicily/Malta/North Africa map as an example! Did the mapmakers go into every little detail?
Besides, I'm not pressing anyone to do anything. If such a map ever comes up, fine. If not, fine also.

BTW-it was the 352nd who announced they were doing a 1:1 scale map of england to europe after they finished their BoB map. However-for reasons I know the moderators would not like us to dicuss or for me to talk about there was a dispute and they left. I won't say anymore as it is not my place. Fly-zo-take over from me in what I'm saying as I may be wrong... Big Grin

That's very interesting. I was hoping there might be other players who realize that only full scale maps belong in a game that was intended to be modeled after the real world as apposed to a fantasy like world that is out of scale. I would suggest however that IL2 is best suited for tactical level gaming which is why to me it makes more sense to have the maps only cover a smaller section of the world. To me the most important thing is that a reasonable attempt is made to model the most significant features of an area and to keep the distance from one point to the next as accurate as possible. Also the altitudes of the mountains should be about the same as in the real world. Obviously however every detail can't possibly be accurate or the map would take too long too load to be practical. I've heard the argument that reduced scale maps make it possible to play campaign style games however I don't buy that at all. If an island for example were about 100 miles long and about 50 miles wide in the real world and someone creates a map to which they claim is the same island but it is only 75 miles long and 37.5 miles wide, I would submit that they have not modeled the island that they claim to have modeled and it is instead a fictitious island. Not modeling every little feature of each town will have very little effect on game play while reducing the height of the mountains and distances from one airfield to another by 50 or 25 % would have a huge effect on the game play. The bottom line is that it wouldn't be at all the same mission on a reduced scale map and it would be delusional in my opinion to pretend that it is the same mission as the one at full scale.

I agree with you completely for a map of this nature and size. While certain cities and historical areas need to be somewhat accurate, a map of this nature would be used differently than one for a much smaller area. BRUNS of high altitude would be the most common use but I'm sure there would be developed certain dogfights in key areas.
But this is only my opinion and a map of this stature and size should be somewhat easier to make due to lack of exacting detail as opposed to one for BOB. It wouldn't surprise me to find that those who are developing maps for BOB also in a short time of releasing the BOB map, release one of European size with less detail. Again just my opinion.

It is virtually impossible to make map of this scale of Europe due engine limitations. I wish we could, though. The Slot works perfectly, because there is lots of open sea. If you ever want to make a really big map, you need a team and lots of time.
I only make Small maps because i usually work alone. I have now covered quite big area of Southern Finland. I want to make a grand campaing with Stock Finnsgulf map as a tactical map for transiton flights and high altitude bomber missions and my small DF maps for special subcampaigns. I also wanted to make tactical big map for Eastern Karelia, but that map is quite dull, because it was and it is mostly swamps, lakes ponds and forests and only few villages and roads.
If BOB SOW will ever make it to gold, i'm pretty sure that it can handle bigger maps too, fingers crossed!

EDIT:
I just calculated the size of my maps and they cover (in 1:1) small part of Southern Finland and i have put countless hours to make them.

Can you make a map of England to north west part of Europe,
and
east France to west Germany

-- size similar to Biscay (means as big as possible)
