Gun Convergence setting
#1

I know this has been ask before so I'll change the question a little and hope it makes sense. Is there any way in the IL2 FMB to created a stationary firing platform that your plane can be placed on and have a target placed at different ranges ie. 200,250,300yds so that one could get into the cockpit, sight on a target at what ever range he chooses and get a feel for what he should be seeing at those ranges in his gun sight in other words allow him to set his convergence while on the ground, I know it will be different in the air but at least there's a solid base to start from. I will assume that there is no way this can be done in the FMB because the tail of the a/c would have to be raised so it's parallel to the ground and there would also have to be a means to align the targets. Is there such a mod out there? Thanks TC

AFAIK no. No platform, no weapon mechs around. Cry

Just go to QMB, set up you and your fav fighter and an easy opponent, like a C-47, or an unarmed fighter, preferrably inferior to your crate
and start practicing. My advice would be to turn on the Icons. That way, you could check the distance "for real"
Try out different approaches and convergence settings, until you find out what works best for you.
It's mostly a personal thing.

Two thoughts come to mind to give you what you want:

Set your plane's take-off icon more than 800 metres from an airfield on the base of a gently rolling hill and put the second Normfly Icon at 90 degrees to the hill. Place what ever you want as a target and fire away. The other idea would be to use something really tall like the Aloha Tower at whatever distance you want. Some planes will still fire over the tower at what might be too close a range but at least you'd get something.

I went and threw together a mission in five minutes to give you an idea of what I mean. Copy and paste THIS TEXT in Notepad using the file names:

Bore sighting guns 1_ru.properties

Short Bore sight guns for P-51D\n

This will have you shooting at the racing poles from about 300 metres. You can go in and change the distance in FMB and the plane as well of course.

Hope this helps.

Great days all.

Plantoid Thanks for the mission it gives me a starting point, the only thing that stops me from using your mission as is, is due to the fact that when you start the mission the plane rolls down the hill and using the brakes/chocks doesn't stop it, other than that it perfect because as you stated one can place targets at any given range in front of the plane. Any Ideas on how to stop the plane from rolling? Thanks Again TC

Sorry, I didn't think about that problem 'cause I stand on the brake pedal on my Saitek rudder pedals when the mission starts.

Hmmm, I just ran the mission without using the brake pedal and my plane didn't move a bit when the mission began. I did notice that firing the guns would start the plane rolling but using the keyboard brakes before firing stopped that as well. Are you starting the engine? If you are you don't need to - just hit the ignition switch on-off to move the prop just enough to clear your view. Other than that I'm kinda at a loss, sorry.

Great days all.

I tried the brake pedal on my Saitek rudder pedals and that didn't stop the plane from rolling, I haven't tried the keyboard brake but will, and no I didn't start the engine, as soon as the mission loaded the plane started to roll and I couldn't stop it. Will try the keyboard and report back. TC

Edit: I tried the keyboard brakes, rudder pedal brakes and set chocks and the plane rolls as soon as the mission starts, also did you make this as a coop? TC

Stupid question: you did set the brake in the HOTAS section of the controls right? Sorry, had to ask...

And no, it's not a co-op; I just made the mission and ran it through FMB saving it in the main folder.

I'm wondering if I have mods that you don't have or vice-versa that may impact this situation. I'm a cowboy in that I don't have any packs like UP or HSFX or the like - I prefer complete freedom and play offline or hook-up only with my buddy who has the same mods.

I kinda like your idea about this and would like to see some mod come out that lets us level any plane and use an actual target butt. There are all sorts of photos out there of planes in jury-rigged cradles lifting their tails off the ground and shooting the hell out targets to align the guns.

I'd like to thnk my idea was a fair to middling good one but, sorry you can't get it to work. Maybe someone else can do something.

Great days all.

Yes they are set right, I don't mine the asking who knows might have missed something and I use both the UP and HSFX which might be the problem, still checking will keep you informed. TC

Can you e-mail me the two files you have ie, .mis and _ru.properties, maybe there's something in the list you sent that's missing. TC
