[Download] Caucasus Map

OK, gotcha.
I used GIMP and changed all textures. All working fine now.
Been working on different things including more roads and harbors at Sochi and Sukhumi. Will try to post some screenshots tomorrow.

Much more accomplished! more cities populated, more roads/railroads added. After adding many "MOD BRIDGES" I've decided to change those to "hand built" bridges like the ones on Zuti's Slovenia map. Looks better and more functional in my opinion.

Sukhuhmi and its harbor. Seaplane base in lower left corner. Yes, the Black Sea coast does have palm trees

Sochi - site of next winter olympics! Have not populated the city yet but harbor is finished.

Zestaponi and its airfield - (smaller version of the airfield near Gori)

Also added roads through the mountain passes. This will make it easier to see how far the Germans advanced through these valleys. All roads are placed by hand in 3-D zoom mode to choose the best possible lay and reduce the error of roads going up the sides of mountains. In some places the land is too steep so I did not lay roads in those areas; for example, over higher mountain passes.

Khadyzhensk - The German offensive to take Tuapse moved through this area. Khadyzhensk is at the western border edge of this Caucasus map. The stock Kuban map also has this region.

Teberda - in central region of this map near Mt. Elbrus. Germans also advanced through this valley but were finally stopped at the Klukhorskiy Pass.

A view of the new bridges with a modern Su-26 racer.

The shallow water looks really good up close in the above pic but higher altitudes is less so.

SURPRISE! I've textured a winter map using the Mbug textures.
This is for the time period in early November when snows started to fall and when the German advance was routed. After that the Soviets mounted a major winter counteroffensive and pushed the Germans all the way back to the Kuban region. This winter map will allow for missions to be made for that era - as someone else requested about a year ago. I did not want to make it a hard and heavy snow because it's still early winter. I hope you all enjoy it.

Hey Poltava, I see you're looking for more haha!
Do you have any suggestions for improvements?

I might add another small airfield along the north-central border.
Also, Kutaisi needs to be moved to a different location.
The Georgian Military Road needs to be altered to a different route over the mountain pass.
Other than that and finishing populating the cities, I'm pretty satisfied. So if changes need to be made then let me know.

Added airfields by Kurganinsk and by Mostovskoy to fill in the empty area.

Revelations have appeared to me! I worked on the 2D edm_01 and 02 and improved the look significantly. In the process of choosing the best size of the 2D maps and fiddling with the texts I discovered how texts work. This may not be news to some people but it may help other amateurs like myself.

As in my previous maps and in other maps I've seen, all texts (ie, region names, small village names) always show from zoom out to zoom in on the FMB. Stock IL2 maps and others like Mbug_Slovakia winter have large texts that disappear as you zoom in and small village texts only appear as you zoom in...and they appear on the 3D landscape too....this is the effect I was searching for and I discovered how to do it.

When placing a text on your map, there are three boxes below the colors with checks in them. These checks determine when the name appears as you zoom in.
If you want a large text, for example: BLACK SEA, to disappear as you zoom in, then only check the first box, other boxes empty.

After discovering how texts appear as you zoom in, I still had the problem of my texts not appearing on the 3D landscape (zoom in all the way). I noticed agracier's Hankow map and Mbug's map have this effect.
.... so I looked at agracier's sizes for his 2D maps which was the only difference, and the answer is right there!

I changed my 2D map sizes.
edm_02 = same size as map_T and map_H
edm_01 = 4 x size of edm_02

Now my texts work like they do in stock IL2 maps!

Problem now is that I need to change a lot of small village names to only appear as you zoom in close.
So I looked at the code in the text file and discovered which place number affects when the name appears on map.

It's the first single digit number after the first two series of numbers:
xxxxxxxx xxxxxxx 7 (numbers after that determine location and last number is color).

number 7 = texts show all the time
number 6 = texts only show as you zoom in close
number 1 = texts only show when zoom out

If this "secret" was already out there in some tutorial then I missed it. Anyhow, now I know the secret and sharing this info might help others.
All the Best!

Here's the new 2D edmap. Roads and railroads not on yet because still WIP adding things. Added new airfields at Kurganinsk and Mostovskiy. Added a few more towns northwest of Mineralnye Vody. All cities/towns are populated now. I might make available to download next weekend.
Note: not all small town names are showing in the Terek River region.

Here is the Terek River region where the largest battles took place. I gave more attention to this area by adding more towns and variety of ground textures. The city of Grozny is not on the map but there are a couple of its satellite airfields.

The 2D map makes you think the land is a desert but it does look more green with the textures. I edited the midland4 texture to make it look more dry to represent end of summer/Fall time period. The steppe land north and northeast of Mozdok is actually very arid and dry so the texture was edited again to look more dry and dusty. IMO the colors blend very nicely with very little contrast between different textures.

Nice screenies, especially the winter version. Big Grin
Winter scenarios are my favourite ones, looking forward to the release. 8)
I see you used the good old rocky textures made by Faschmidt (or Faschmitt).
Those winter .tga's by M_Bug are great! I used them for my own version of the Slovenia map combined with Gilb57's winter textures.

Here some screenies of my retextured winter Slovenia:

hi Lejo thanks to you and to everyone else who have posted here. Your textures look great too. These newer winter textures give a realistic feel to the maps.
The rocky mountain texture on mine has its tree color changed to a darker green to blend better with other trees. Someone mentioned to me last year that I should change it. Since that time I've learned how to edit textures. That was a good idea, whomever said it, thanks!

Summer and Winter maps are in this download.
The download package includes the map folder, textures folder, and a Readme.
You will need to add lines to your All.ini file and those are in the Readme file.
