To patch or not to patch
#1

I'm having a hard time making up my mind as whether to patch up to 4.10, or hold off until the mods are updated and compatible. What are some of you guys doing?

The best thing is to make a new install of IL2 and patch it to 4.10
BUT keep your 4.09, then start adding to your 4.10 all things that
Are updated to 4.10 and at some point in time your 4.10 will come
To be what your 4.09 is now and some time after will more then likly
Go passed your 4.09.

I didn't even think of that, I can have the best of both. Thanks Deutschmark!

You can even have 4.10 as a JSGME switchable option within Ultrapack 2.01. See their forum for the regarding updater or just use the Ultrapack update option to get it automatically.
The only thing you cannot get in parallel with 4.09 is a modded 4.10 installation.
This indeed requires two separate installations, at least for the time being.

So what you can have in one installation atm within Ultrapack is a plain vanilla 4.09, a modded (Ultrapack + user specific mods) 4.09 and a plain vanilla 4.10, all switchable easily with JSGME.

Hi. I think the best advise for now is to keep UP and 4.10 apart as described by Deutschmark.
As almost all of us have experienced when installing mods or patches, soner or later it ends up in
disaster and the need to reinstall from basic "4.09m" or even 4.08m are the fact. My best recommendations are as sad before.
Always keep a clean copy of 4.09m on your HD. My self also keep a clean
copy of UP2.0, UP2.1, HSFX 4.1 and now also 4.10m.
I know it take a lot of HD space but it have saved me many houers due to my mistake when instaling
a mod or patch the wrong way or not following the instructions to the point. You can sit back, feel lot more safer
and cooler when trying out mods/patces on the versions your gaming with, knowing you always can get one new easy up working
again from your backups.
In the end maybe I patch 4.10 with UP2.1 and ceep a clean JSGME 4.10m version as well.
And as mentioned 4.10 most probable in time end up with lot of mods as earlier patches have done before.

Build up your new 4.10.

If you have a modded 4.09, keep it.

Create a new install, or if you have a clean 4.09, use that to patch to 4.10.

I have the room on my hard disk, so soon I will have these IL2:1946 installs:

-4.09 clean (Backup)
-4.09 modded (JGSME)
-4.10 clean (Backup)
-4.10 modded (JGSME?)

I'm working on setting up JSGME to work with 4.10 as we speak.
Will release a pack for it later this week including some mods I setup to work with JSGME and 4.10 as well as some that have already been released for 4.10.

I have the Steam version of IL2 (I believe it is 4.09m). This is my second download because of problems with trying to Mod. I was following instruction found here and elsewhere. With a Steam version (goes to C:\\Programs (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\il 2 etc......
I could not figure out how to download to the C:\\ root rather than Programs (like some have suggested), so I am not sure how to download another copy from Steam and put it elsewhere (perhaps on my larger backup drive), so I could patch the first on to 4.10m. I have Win6-64. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have already learned so much from this site - many, many thanks to contributors.

Hi, rlprestin and welcome to our community website Smile

When using an installer, you can simply delete the default destination for the install and type C:\ for IL-2 to become a major folder in your disk. IL-2 should never go in Program Files with Vista or Win7 operating systems. IL-2 will run a tiny bit better with the shortest possible file path in the installation. This and other basics can be found in my guide (link below this).

Please feel free to ask more questions about installation in the following thread found in the IL-2 Technical Help forum.

Thanks for the suggestion - I have read the Newbie posting a couple of times. With the Steam version, one has to install from the Steam site and I never saw a choice for changing the destination folder. I have done that many times downloading other things, but the Steam site just stumped me. I got IL2 1946 there for $4.99 around New Year's, so couldn't pass it up. I may just get a disk version from Amazon the next time I do an order there (it was only $10 a while ago). I had read that the Steam version worked well with Win7-64, where the disks involved updates and patches, which they do. From what I have seen so far, IL2 is well worth the small investment - it is just such a classic and will likely be using it for some time.

Thanks again - I will use the Newbie guidelines to create various versions, like is suggested.
