NEW B-17 Cockpits (WIP, Stage 1)
#1

Well,

Now that I've started down the infamous, dark, JAVA road, I've decided to take on my first 'REAL' project. Myself and a couple of other friends will be making brand new, 100% from scratch, as close to the real thing as you can get without getting into the pit, cockpits for the B-17's

For far too long I've dreamt of the day when I would have a 'Real' B-17 pit with correct gauges, correct controls etc to fly in IL-2.
So now that I've begun to learn JAVA and Blender, I'm going to make one.

Currently, we are in the data acquisition phase of the project. Gathering photos from B-17's we can find at air shows, here at the aviation museums etc.
Next will be process flow-charting for cockpit functions, stations, views etc.

Make no mistake. I'm no expert in modeling, but other people that I've begun to ask for help on this project are. This project will more than likely take appx 1 - 1.5 yrs to complete due to my schedule, but as my knowledge increases the time it takes will decrease. Continue to check back here from time to time for updates, but screen shots will not be posted for quite a while.

There will be a VERY small beta release to select individuals for testing. I've pretty much already selected personnel for this task. If you haven't been asked, don't despair, I may add others later depending on interest.

I look forward to making this my debut project as far as 'Real Mods' and hope you all will enjoy it as much as I think I will building it.

Well I don't think you even need to learn JAVA to add the cockpit, I think it is just a matter of changing a single line from what I know.

BTW nice Cockpit Messer.

Java comes into play with the gauges all working correctly.

Yes I meant for example giving a plane a cockpit that exists.

O.k., but the cockpit that exists is so full of errors it's not even funny. That's why I'm starting from scratch.
This is not going to be another 'Franken Pit' project. Everything for this cockpit is being done in either Blender or 3dMax with a brand new Java package.
All correct gauges, functioning properly with all correct stations.

Will be looking especially hard at the Java code for the Bombardier and Navigation/Radio Officer's stations.
I'm going to try to get these to work as close to the way the sight worked in B-17 'The Mighty Eighth' as possible.

That means:
  • Correctly modeled Norden Bomb Sight
  • Settable Norden Bomb Sight
  • Correct Animation for Norden Bomb Sight
  • Correct Autopilot Controls for Bombardier Station
  • Correct Navigational Aides for Navigator Station

Hi. {HVY-E}Jinxx
Yes!! :OO
Will I bee waiting for this one ?. For shure ...AS much as Im waiting for Mongouse B24D. Now to bee release with TD 4.11 when that day comes.
Well if you manage to have it intergrated to work with the "Norden bombsight" as in the good old "Flying Fortres B17 Mighty 8TH" God! I played that one a lot.
It will be even more worth waiting for. I Just DLéd "633_HellsAngels campaine" and have flying the first mission. Just love to fly the B17 and as
one of the heavy in the 303d Bombardment Group. But how greate it would have been to have your Cockpit {HVY-E}Jinxx and a Nordensight as you
describing it (again). I realy wish you the verey best in that of your new project. I am now subscriber of your topic... :Smile)

My very best luck..

Thank you all.

I've begun dissecting the Norden Bomb-sight as my first task.
Researching functions and mechanical operation. I want the NBS to work just like the one in B-17 II, 'The Mighty Eighth'.
Will begin modeling it after I get back from the museum later this month, (Need Close up digital pictures).

Greetings HVE Jinx
just wanted to say good for you. There are many bottom feeders (non contributing mod users) like myself who are very pleased for such a project to be undertaken. I wish you good luck. I will be watching for updates, and I will not bother you with "Are you done yet ? s".
