Totally Confused

All right. I've spent the last week and a half looking into all the mods and different programs out there, and while I've been into flight sims since the days of EAW, to the Il2 Demo, to IL-2, to Forgotten Battles (with the last few years off) and have at least a more than basic understanding of things including past skinning other little Il2 contributions, I can't for the life of me figure all this mod stuff out. It's like a giant cluster "f" in my mind. That said, what I need is a clear recommendation for what to get to dress up the sim.

As far as my needs, I like and prefer historic. I'd like to see a choice of different engine and gun sounds, maybe a few smoke and tracer improvements. Also a better over all 'look' to the sim, ie., plane shine and so on. I'd also like to try 6DOF. I’m not to interested in all kind of new planes and so on, though little things like sliding canopies on the 109 and 190 would be good.

I'll be playing a lot off-line until I get my skills back up, then maybe, I'll be getting back with my old squadron (II Jg1) and doing some on-line flying too, probably with vanilla Il-2, so it would be nice to be able to switch between versions.

So, based on the above, and since I can't seem to be able to put all the pieces together by my self, what exactly should I get? (Once everything catches up with 4.10 and/or it's fix patch)

Thanks and S!

Falke,

First, we need to know if you want to run 4.09m as it's the one with the most most and the most stable atm, or if you want to start off with 4.10m and apply the basic mods that are currently available.

I have 3 complete installs of the game on my system.

4.10m (Un-modded Baseline install for emergencies and upgrades).
4.10m Modded (Currently using the SAS activator until the new version of HSFX is released).
4.09m Modded (Using HSFX 4.11 with the option of using about 70 different mods).

I have 4.10 right now and a full clean back up of it and wouldn't have a problem with trying some of the basic mods, like the SAS activator. (Which I'm not real clear on!)

I could also easily install a clean 4.09 version (From Disc) and would have no problem running it using HSFX 4.11.

O.k.
Since you have the game up to 4.10, go to my other thread here:
Modding 4.10m

This will explain how to mod your 4.10m game.

Got 4.09 up and running too, ( viewtopic.php?f=106&t=30994 ) but while it still runs I think I screwed up. You tell me...

Everything went in as it was supposed to during the 4.09 HSFX install, and the sim launched and played perfectly. Then I decided to get clever after noticing that the Generic Mod Enabler had an update button. I pressed it and of course, down loaded and installed the new Enabler. (2.6)

When I went to use it though it wouldn't see the jsgmemods folder nor the sub folders with in. It wanted only a "MODS" folder. So I created one and put all the jsgemods sub folders inside and then played the sim again, without a problem. What I'm afraid of is that when I finally get around to playing on-line again, things won't match up with the servers version. (I neither changed or added any thing to either the original 'stock' jsgemods or the newly created "MODS" folders.) Will I be all right or should I try and change things back, folders wise.

Final question. ------- A ".7z" question - Answered all by my self! ---------------

Thanks. Your time, efforts and incredible patience with all of us dim wits is much appreciated!

The nice thing about using the JSGME is that mods enabled using it are not permanent- you can just disable them if they cause a conflict.
In my own squad it's become part of the pre-flight checklist to make sure everyone has the same mods enabled.

i put everything that has nothing to do with adding aircraft into the JGSME folder

I'd be glad to put everything (excluding adding new aircraft) back into the JGSME folder, but the new 2.6 Mod enabler won't see them. At least I don't know how to make it see into the new (but proper) place.

If JSGME isn't seeing them, then you have either a problem with the directory location of JSGME in the JSGME.ini file or you have the subdirectories file structure wrong.

Give me a list of the mods you'd like to add via JSGME and I'll make sure they are JSGME compatible and host them for you for D/L.

I'm also in the process of taking some screen shots of my file structures so you can see what folders you should have and where.

I believe I've solved it. I got rid of the 2.6 JSGME.exe and all its associated files and put the 2.3 back into the main IL2 folder as well as the HSFX mods back into the jsgmemods folder. With a little fiddling, the 2.3 JSGME.exe works as it should and is game tested.

Thanks again

Just to make sure I have it set back up the right way, the sub folders inside my E:\Program Files\Ubisoft Mods\IL-2 Sturmovik 4-09 Mods\jsgmemods folder are ...
